I think it's probably .txt Try importing it to paint from the scanner instead of word.

But if that's not the problem, you have to give more details on the problem.

What kind of scanner and utility do you have? You never know if one of us has the same/similar type of scanner....

Common image formats these days include:
.jpg (or .jpeg)
.gif
.bmp

There are many other image formats, including:
.pcx
.png
.tga
.tif

Your scanning utility should at least have the ability to scan to JPG or BMP formats.

My scanner can also scan texts directly into word as a txt file, so I thought maybe that was going on.

If you're putting the image into MSPaint, I think its default format is bmp. When you click "save as" (regardless of the program), find the dropdown format menu and choose jpg, gif, or png. There's explanations of what formats are better for what in the FAQ.

I don't know, I don't use it. Don't even know if I have it. I use CorelScan that drops it into Corel Draw. Then I export it to Photoshop for adjusting. *shrug* But the MSPaint topic comes up so much, that's the only one I know the default for. I figure it doesn't matter because the process to fix it is the same.

I'm still curious about a few things. What sorts of photoshop programs do you have? Most photoshop programs have an "Acquire" or "Scan" command that you can use to access the scanner and scan an image. Even Word can call the scanner (primarily for OCR, aka text scanning).

And two, if you want to, what were the programs/steps you used when you encountered this problem.

An HP scanner, eh? What program manages the scanning process?

Your scanning program should have an option called "Change Resolution" (or similar) which allows you to specify the size (scale) of the image as it's scanned in. Higher resolution means a larger image resulting from the scan.

Take a 12"x9" sheet of paper for example. At various resolutions, you get:
50dpi = 600x450 pixels
75dpi = 900x675 pixels
100dpi = 1200x900 pixels
150dpi = 1800x1350 pixels

Dude, mine come in better Dpi's than you even mentioned. I have s**t being scanned and photographed in some cases (when it comes to paintings etc) at some 3,000 pixels! lol Laughing

I get some really high resolution. If you saw my stuff on my website you'd see.

Standard print dpi (unless it's really large work) is 300 dpi.

So for regular paper size that'd be 2550x3300 pixels. But unless you plan on printing or heavily editing it digitally, kinda useless to scan it in quite so big.

My HP scanner can go as high as about 2400dpi . . . but then my files would be 400x bigger than they are now if I used it Laughing
