Well the world cup is approaching, 32 teams are practicing and having matches between them, to prepare themselves for the greatest football (soccer for US) event in the last 4 years.
Who do you think is going to win? Do you have a favorite team? Is your country playing in the cup? Wich group has the deadliest teams? who will play in the final?
Discuss it all here in the "Worldcup thread"! _________________

I'm watching. B)
South Korea did exceedingly well last time, but I'll be happy if they make the top 16 this time around. The fourth place the last time around was a fluke. -_-
other than that, I'm rooting for France, Russia, and Japan. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

This time Costa Rica has a really hard team.
Having their first match against Germany is a lot of pressure although I think we may get a draw, and if we also draw with Poland we can easily get to the top 16.
Costa Rica is #25 of the world right now, And in september I think we were #19 or somethign around that, I think we have possibilities.... _________________

I really can't seeing my home nation (England) getting anywhere near the quarter-finals this year. They're really weakened, although they have some excellent new players.
Otherwise, i'm all France and Germany. Everyone else I know is gonig for Brazil, <_<, and the majoutiy of the world. _________________ I came

I just hope that brazil loses against Czech Republic in second round, (There is a lot of possibilities that they have a match against each other) because I really don't want to see Brazil winning their third cup in a row, the finals have been crappy since 1998 <_< _________________

Yeah, I really couldn't stand Brazil winning. Although I respect their players, and their incredible ability to weave in and out of players, but lets have some change.
But still, I do enjoy watching them string together four passes before skipping around the right-back, then crossing the ball in, and scoring. Perfect. _________________ I came

why was the final for 1998 crappy? Brazil lost to France for god sakes.
Brazil will do well, but I like underdogs, I want to see Russia beating back the Germans after the Germans beat back the Poles and the French, for the second time.
PS:, there's like 3 football threads in here, I posted in the original one... I think. |

Yes brian you posted on the original one
Russia isn't part of the cup this year and neither france nor germany will go much longer in the cup to play against each other.
The 98 cup finals sucked because Brazil shouldn't have passed to the finals, Holland should have won the penalty shoot-out, it would have been more interesting _________________

I guess I'm a little late but oh well...
First off, Alpha_zero, do not underestimate your national team's power...I think England could pass pretty easily to the quarter-finals! Although I missed the Paraguay match but I've heard England did pretty well in that one! Plus Sweden -in their recent shape- are no match for England.
Now that we've seen almost every team in action, I have the following to say:
Brasil, Argentina, Czech Republic, and Italy are superb! And I think three of them might very well be in the last four! The forth one of the last four could be either England or Portugal (it was very hard to separate them in Euro 2004 after all!)
The Underdogs could be: Cote d,Ivoire, South Korea (though not exactly an underdog), Ecuador, Ghana (difficult but not impossible), and finally, I'm hoping, Tunisia.
And last but simply not least, I'm sorry to disappoint you all, but I think Brasil will hold the world cup for the 6th time this year...it looks simply...obvious, though I hope Argentina (who, in my opinion are the second best team after Brasil) win the cup. It's just almost everything indicates Brasil's win! I mean, any player in the Brasilian team could score at any moment: Ronaldinho; the best player in the word (who was ranked better than Pele!), Adriano; the great striker of Inter-Milan, Kaka; Milan's magician, Ronaldo and Robinho; Real Madrid's dangerous strikers, not to mention Lucio, Ze-Roberto, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Juan; the defenders who could as well strike at any moment! How could you not fall in love with the team that if split into two teams: the line-ups and the substitutes, both teams could get to the world cup final match? _________________ Nala: I can't believe it. England did Not do "pretty well" in their match, their goal was an own goal. They lacked any attack, especially with Gerard and Lampard being the same players, almost, they don't know when to go up and let the other stay behind or stay behind themselves. Eventhough they are great players, I feel one of them will have to be substituted and a defensive midfielder put in the open position. Tell Crouch to go home and bring on Rooney.
Brazil weren't that "Superb", they were pretty disappointing actually. They, like France, didn't play well, their stikers did fuck all, both teams. Brazil got a win because of there great defence, which is better than I thought, and brilliant Midfield players. Kaka score their only goal, Ronaldinho wasn't up to much and something will have to be done about the two stikers up front, Ronaldo and Adriano aren't working together. Put on Robinho instead of one of them, maybe. If Brazil keep playing like this, I think Argentina will win the Cup _________________ |

I have to disagree..I saw England's goal and it was definitely not an own goal! Beckham scored the goal, and it's not just me..all the critics here think so!
And as for Brasil, it was only too obvious to me that they just wanted to win with the least amount of damage; they didn't want their players to get tired or injured, and that's always a wise policy in the first rounds; many teams did so in their opening games so far like Italy, Portugal, and England (I expect). _________________ Nala: I can't believe it. Yes it was an own goal, video reply shows it hitting one of Paraguay's players
Brazil were also trying to get more than one goal, it was a bad performance, accept it _________________ |

Why are you so angry TK421? I'm neither from Brasil nor from England!! But I like to watch good play, and I'm just expressing my opinion!
The ball hit one of Paragway's defenders, but it did not change it's course! It's as simple as that! Every critic on the TV agrees on that..it's like when the goalkeeper toutches the ball on it's way into the net! And FIFA registered the goal for Beckham, end of story!!!
Brasil put on a very good show indeed, and Ronaldinho did some really great moves, plus Ronaldo and Adriano's really dangerous chances...to sum it up, their performance was great, but you don't expect Brasil to win 5-0 agianst Croatia, one of Europe's best teams, now do you???? _________________ Nala: I can't believe it. It still hit the Defenders head [Gamarra, I think] , and watching replys of it, the ball was directed into the goal by that touch. For the amount of class England have they should have gotten 2 or 3 goals. The English players don't play well together at all.
And I don't know what Brazil game you were watching or even if you have ever seen a soccer match, but Brazil did not play very good at all.
but you don't expect Brasil to win 5-0 agianst Croatia, one of Europe's best teams, now do you????
I would have expected about two more goals from a team like Brazil, Croatia are not one of the best teams in Europe, they are an ok team but they come way behind Italy, France, England Spain, etc. Ronaldinho did not do much, he had a few moments but not nearly as much as he usually would. I found the Defence and Midfield good, but I don't see how you thought the forwards were good, Adriano and Ronaldo did absolutely nothing. They were not as good as they should be and thats that. Roberto Carlos, Kaka and Cafu were very good in the match but when you watch a Brazil match you expect a lot more than what happened in that match. _________________ |

You know what TK421? Whatever
I'm not gonna bother talking about what I think as it should be quite clear by now.
I have a strange feeling that tells me you're Australian, TK421, as Australia plays in the same group with Brasil....have I guessed correctly?
Anyway, the English team put on another great show today against T&T, so congratulations all English guys on getting through to the next round! _________________ Nala: I can't believe it. He's gone back.

No, I'm not from Austrailia, you fag
OMG, England were fuckin' crap today aswell, have you even watched soccer before ???, Against Trinidad and Tobago they should have won it easily. Instead they got by on luck and i'll give Gerard that goal as it was good, but they were playing the smallest nation in the Cup and they didn't score 'til the 83 minute or something. Their long balls to Crouch is pretty pathetic, and even the commentators say they have no chance of winning the world cup.
I'm right _________________ |

This is the last time I'm replying to a post of yours TK421, and if I get more insults from you, I'm going to have to report you to the administrators regretfully:
For the last time, I'm expressing my opinion without trying to insult anyone! Trinidad & Tobago looked to me as a great team who were struggling to show a shining image in their first appearance in the FIFA World Cup...they even managed to embarrass Sweden (and don't you dare say Sweden are not a great European team!) by getting a draw with them; so it doesn't matter how small a country is as long as its team plays well.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: It's only the first round, and if you're going to look for teams that played fantastic games in the first round, you won't find anybody except perhaps Spain, Czech Republic, and Ecuador...and sometimes that kind of performance fades away in the second round, but still it's great performance from those teams and I give them full credit for that. So when I say England showed 'great performance' what I mean is great performance according to first round standards!
I don't care what critics you're referring to, but the ones I've heard agreed that the English team attacked very well today, but the stress of the game and the fighting spirit of their opponents made them miss many shots until, reasonably enough, they scored twice.
I believe I was congratulating English folks on the win of their team, and I did not ask people to tell me what they thought about the game...so please, from now on, do not tell me what you think about me or any of my posts unless I ask you to.
And last but simply not least, I think I've read in your profile that you're a student, which means that I probably had watched Soccer since before you were born, and judging by some examples I saw in previous world cups (like Italy in 1994), teams in the first round could hide most of their tactics, but they would still be impressive, so please do not repeat the phrase 'have you even watched soccer before ?' again because I'm starting to feel it describes you. _________________ Nala: I can't believe it. mmmmm......... yeah thats great, Sport
The channel which I watch it on has unbiased commentators so I don't give a fuck whether you care or not. Teams also like to intimidate other teams during the first round and these players should not become tired after a few games as they are getting paid to be match fit. It is the managers fault if the teams are tired cause they are over training them and it seems a lot of teams are tired and lazy out on the pitch.
We'll see in the knock out stages whether all you say about England will have been right or not. I don't have anything against England but the team can't play together at all. Hopefully, i'll be proved wrong. _________________ |
