Do you have a certain technique for use with acrylics? If so, post here, and you could either explain it in detail, or simply list the steps as I will do right now.
1. First, I take a concept and draw it on regular recycled sketch pad paper.
2. I then take a charcoal medium and sketch it out of the open non stretched canvas with basic shading.
3. I outline the basic outer line of the figure and/or figure(s)
4. I then put down a white base coat for the starting colours and the beggining colours that are essential such as black or red, blue or yellow.
5. I take black to mix with the original colour for shading and then add more of the original colour if too dark.
6. For glare it glasses, eyes, glass, etc. I add white the original colour and then the colour again so it's not too light that its a different colour. ex. Red + white = Pink
Red + white + RED = light red but not pink.
7. to finish off the painting I lay down another white coat, except its a finishing coat. I then put my signiture, the last two numbers of the date and the number of which the copy is if there are any copies.
8. TO make sure that the painting does not peel or flake, I coat it in nail polish and wipe the excess with A TOWEL, then pour water on it to make sure the white finish coat and the nail polish holds.
9. Its done, I the painting is then put on my wall and I take a picture of it to submit it HERE! ^^. This are the easy 8 steps in which I follow for my works of art. I will actually be submitting more soon ^^. Very Happy

Man- I paint so differently. O-O

I've been getting in the habbit of thumbnail sketchesn even when painting from life. Usualy I do 5 or 6 quick thumbnails in charcole, before moving onto my full canvas. Currently I'm working on a 3x2ft canvas. 6 square feet of acrylic goodness.

Once I have my concept, I take a big fat brush, load it up with cobalt blue and water, and quickly gesture in my general composition, ignoring all the details. Then I take and quickly mix a few general colors I think I want to use, and sketch in a value study. This is also the time where I take and correct some of my drawing issues. My friends affectionatly reffer to this stage as the "amorphus blob" stage and my painting teacher calls it's "Shannon's Mess".

After I have the whole canvas covered, I start cementing my forms and colors. I explor how far I can push my contrast in color, temperature, and value. I don't use black paint, I usualy just use purples or greens or the complimentary color for my darks, and I try to push it to the extreme...Again, I try to correct and asses any drawing and compositional issues that come up.

Once I have all my forms and my composition to the point where most would call it complete, I whip out my smaller brushes and add the little details. I play around with completmentry colors, outlines, highlights, shadows, and reflections, and I'm carefuly not to push it too far.

Once I've completed it, I show it to various classmates and teachers for some final critiques before completly calling done, and then it's usualy put into my portfolio to await a reveiw, critique, or aplication reveiw and photographed whenever i have the time.

wow Surprised Shocked Razz that sounds too professional to me. I'm a bit more "easy-doing" with acrylics, I think. For instance, I don't really do the what is called above the white coat or layer at the end. The sketching, however, is exactly the same like I do... But when I make a sketch I just do it without really following these "rules" step by step.
The thing is that working in certain layers is too hard for me. I just paint every little detail at once, every little spot one by one, unless there's a difficult light-effect in the picture. But anyway, your "rules" sound quite nice to follow.. maybe I'll give it a try Very Happy Razz

Nail polish? How big are these paintings, 'cause good lord...you can buy acrylic gloss varnish or resin for much cheaper than nail top coat. Shocked

-- Neutral tone base coat (I skip this too often Confused )
-- sketch in pencil then gone over in thin acrylic just darker than the base coat, with a liner brush
-- Base colors filled in
-- Shadows loosely blocked in (base color mixed with the complimentary color of the light source)
-- Skip to fully rendering eyes and lips. Glaze glaze glaze
-- More glazing to fully blend the skin/clothing. Scumbling for the most part, even though that's a dumb term.
-- Big shadows/highlights of hair blocked in
-- Individual strands with a liner brush
-- Not done till it looks so real you wanna touch it
-- varnish varnish varnish

That's very close to how I do my own acrylic paintings. Though I probably need to add more range in my colors, but that is the basic gyst of it. ^_^ Well said!
