Nicholas Cage is the only actor who can make ritualistic human sacrifices boring.
Saw The Wicker Man this weekend. I was pretty pumped because I heard this is like a cult classic and the ending was supposed to be very disturbing. But from the time it between beginning to end there is no substance, no interesting scenes, no suspence..nothing. Its just Cage interviewing The Village-esque secretive people.
Granted, I kept my hopes up, the ending was supposed to be a mind rape of disturbing proportions so I was patient. I sat through an hour and a half of Cage's monotone questioning, over-the-top screaming, and unneccesary flashbacks that have no relation to the main plot. When I ran out of my large popcorn and starburst, I realized that I was in a for long, boring movie. But I still was hopeful, the ending had to be good, thats all people said was good about it.
Finally, when the movie reaches its long-awaited climax, it turns out to be unpredictable but poorly executed. And not all of the blame goes to Cage for this. The village actors were not a convincing bloodthirsty mob, it was like watching parody zombies from Scary Movie. Not impressive. And Cage...well he screamed well. And that is all he did. Not much else to say.
And the final sacrifice, well I just think it could've been done so much better. Like at nighttime or something. It just wasn't a very disturbing sacrifice. I mean, granted, getting burned to death is no pleasant thing to watch but I just think it could've been scarier.
And also, nothing was every fully explained. I can go on and on and on about that. There are just so many scenes that have nothing to do with the final story and then they confuse you because throughout the whole movie you're trying to connect everything together but in the end you're left with a headache and an empty popcorn bucket.
Anyone else have opinions on this movie? |
