people have been ranting and raving about how "this band is a bunch of emos!" or "you just like them because they're popular in school." well I have a complaint.
MUSIC IS A FORM OF ART
MOST people don't listen to music because it's poular. MOST people listen to music because they like the MUSIC part of it.
So this is a place where I want to know:
"WHAT BANDS DO YOU LIKE AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO THEM?"
no critisism of other people's taste is aloud on this topic. If you have an opinion, post another topic and rant all you want.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My favorite band is System of a Down
I got into them from my brother's friend (no idea what his name is...)
he gave my brother a CD that included some "never-heard-on-th-radio" System of a Down songs.
I liked them so I got all their CD's over the past few years.
They're also an inspiration for me. I taught myself how to play semi-good guitar, by listening to their guitar riffs. _________________ "yesterday's history, tomarrow's a mystery, today's a gift that's why we call it the present."
hmm. My favorite is probally... Either nirvana or Placebo.
Nirvana I just heard on the radio, a local pirate station that was playing I hate my Self and I want to Die, and I feel in love with the noicey sludgy pure punk sound.
Placebo, I read about on fac and DL'd them, loved it, and bought Meds and OMWF with my christmas money. |
Fix'd
On to the topic, I would say that my favorite group must be.... Mago de oz for spanish music, they have great lyrics and musicians, I just happen to love the celtic influcence in their music and the way they use progressive rock elements mixed with folk and metal to sound really unique. On english music I will say Led Zeppelin, most think they are overrated, but they are truly amazing musicians and need no explanation. Paul Gilbert has a very good acoustic album and great technique so he is also on my top bands. _________________
Errr... Nirvana's not punk.
My favourite band is Gazette. I got into them because I previously listened to Dir en Grey and Miyavi, and found an artist who loved Diru and Miyavi and another one of her favourite bands was Gazette, so I figured if we had such similar tastes nothing she could recommend would be that bad. ^-^ Not bad at all, I'll say. Quite delicious. |
My Chemical Romance is my favorite. I got into them when I saw a picture of Gerard Way and then decided to watch the video for Helena. _________________ 14 is forever. |
Is it just me or does that mini-rant at the top of the topic have nothing to do with the actual... topic?
As for my favorite bands, singers, etc... I got into all the J-rock I love now because I started to despise mainstream American music. For some reason music in foreign languages appeals to me more.
I found out a about Gackt by just seeing little tidbits of him here and there until I found a few of his songs on an anime OST site. I liked the way it sounded and one of my friends gave me more of his songs. I eventually became the obsessed Gackt fan I am now. =D
Miyavi, the same friend who introduced me to more Gackt music also got me hooked on Meevers. Also she got me into Gazette, Hyde, Alice Nine, and um... Malice Mizer.
<3
My mom got me into listening to Josh Groban and after she started playing some New Age music in the kitchen and Yokoana mentioned some stuff about Enya and Enigma I got into them as well.
Yeah, most of what I like was recommended and shoved into my face at unexpected times, lol. _________________ I R GRAMMAR NAZI.
It's not just you. Some recent n00bs have their panties in a twist over their clueless hippie ideals that people with rational, well informed opinions don't share. S'all. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
Ah, but thats a total matter of opinion. Its not the usual punk, but neither is Sonic Youth. I concider Grunge to be a subdevision of Punk, similar to Metal-Punk.
indeed i see where you're coming from. I should probably stop that.... but I felt that I should say that at that time so stuff didnt start up, like what happened in my other thread. But still, I know it didn't have anything to do witht the topic. But you would have had to read the other "fights" that took place in the other threads.
Another band i know listen to is Dokken. I don't know too much about them, but I think they're pretty good. My friend asked me to listen to them for some odd reason, so i did. And now I love 'em. They're kind of like Iron Maiden and stuff like that. I don't personally prefer the older rock, but I'm starting to change my taste in music as I get older. _________________ "yesterday's history, tomarrow's a mystery, today's a gift that's why we call it the present."
My favorite band is Nightwish. My boyfriend burned me a CD with random songs on it and one of them was Nightwish's cover of the Phantom of the opera. I thought the lead singer had an amazing voice. I now own like 5 of their CD's. Their lead singer left the band though. They're looking for a new lead singer. _________________ I have magical female powers
Dokken? Um. Well. Dokken is a fuzzy fluffy pretty boy hair band. If you like them, good lord can I give you a list of similar bands. But the guitarist, George Lynch, had a band called Lynch Mob that put out a couple great albums (better than Dokken IMO), and some solo stuff under his own name. Similar.
Exactly what we always tell the "ZOMG LINKIN PARK AND GREEN DAY AND MCR R TEH BESTEST!!!!!" people, and they throw such a fit over it.
Nirvana re:punk.... I really really really hate the tendency for people to slap "punk" onto a whole bunch of things just to show the connection. Grunge is similar to punk, an evolution perhaps, but it is certainly not punk itself. The only reason it's similar is it began for more or less the same reason. Punk came along from all the slickly produced radio acts that were completely vapid and boring, was the complete opposite of that. And grunge hit it big after a decade of loud image, high technical skills, and every band needing a blazing guitar solo and singer that could break glass. Both proved you don't need tons of fancy musicianship to write a good song (or in the case of punk, just a song. Most of theirs were god awful). BUT, there's a huge difference. Punk died the instant it was commercialized. It was a scene, an act, a concept that happened to involve music. You can't make a CD of the sex pistols without destroying what the sex pistols were, and that's exactly what happened. That's why there is no more punk scene as it originally existed, it was adopted by the business.
Grunge, on the other hand...well by the time the early 90s came around, being corporate was the norm. In the late 80s, labels were signing every no-name hair band they could find to put out at least one album, just in case they'd found the next Bon Jovi. Sure, elitist little kids like to piss and moan about Nirvana not being commercial, but they have no problem listening to their CDs. Nirvana and other grunge acts weren't ruined by the corporation because that's not what defined them. They were defined by their sound, which was MUCH more put together than original 70s punk. Band members could actually play. They put out CDs, made music videos, toured, and kept right on going despite being part of the business.
So. No. Grunge is NOT punk. Parts of the sound are similar, but you can say that with any genre. Parts of rock sound similar to blues. Some pop sounds like techno. But that doesn't make them part of the genre any more than Blink182 is punk.
ETA: that's why it's called grunge in the first place. It has a grungy sound, not a punk sound. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
'K. He's connected to Nitro/Jim Gillette, so that would explain the leathers and purple that were throwin' me off (he looks like the love child of Tom Keifer and Phil Lewis). But if he's friends with Jimmy, he must be kewl. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
