I'm asking because i want to find the reasons that people have for making art. I'm not expecting much else but the usual, "I do because i like it." But tell me why you make art and what motivates you. I'm very interested in this subject, like if I was a researcher or something to that nature.

My characters and random ideas that pop in my head make me want to draw. I've got too much in my mind to just keep it there. There's gotta be a way to vent it out. =D

I also like to draw to impress others. What can I say? I'm an attention whore at times.

At least you can admit it. : D

I draw to keep myself and others amused. More for myself lately, though. I'm sick of trying to impress people with skills I don't have.

Hmm... Part of it is because I'm in an animation course and I kinda have to draw, and...

Keeping myself amused, I guess. I don't usually draw outside of class (where I should be paying attention to the lesson...), and I certainly don't do it for attention since I still haven't gotten past the stage where I flip when people watch me draw + hate sharing my sketchbook. o3o; Can't help it; just today I was working on a character design for our group's year project, and my friend saw it and (since it was still in the sketch stage) added in her own touch to it. Which involved adding a fscking ugly gauntlet when she can't. draw. hands. D; Which actually wouldn't have bothered me so much, except that she took a 5B to the sketch when she did that. A 5B! ;A; No way I can get that out...

lol, I'm such a whiny brat. DX But still. Ugh. ;A;

I want other people to be able to see what I see in my head.

The challenging part is to be able to put it on paper just the way I see it.

My sister is my motivation for anything that I do. Naturally as the youngest in my family, I was born with the urge to please my older sister. I always draw picture and write stories to entertain her. She is the reason why Im such a success. Everything I do is chock full of love- even if it doesnt look great.

Well this is progressing well. but all the same any art i do is to use my abilities. although i have very little, when i draw it takes me for ever for detials and color and what not. and soon i should have one of my older pictures up, with touch-ups of course. but i must say to all of you that i am getting good feed back from this you all have your own techniques and thats really what makes your art YOUR art. so now that i know what makes you make art, i would like to know what techniques you all use, to better personalize you as artists. but nver the less any one else may tell me both rasons for their art work. Thank you all for responding i do enjoy reading why you all work so hard at what you make.

I express myself through art (I use the word loosely) because I don't really have any other way to. It helps that I'm not too bad at it. But... yeah, I've recently come to the realization that I can really make people happy by drawing for them. And that makes me happy, so... mm, it's good, but I also feel like I've been neglecting myself and my characters for a while. I just need to find a balance between art for 'myself' and 'other people'.

As for techniques, I use whatever I have available to me. Usually that's pen and colored pencil, but lately I've been doing nothing but CG work. Style-wise, I guess my pictures are defined by their simplicity - thick cartoony outlines are something I just can't seem to get away from. I guess I draw noses and eyes a bit differently from the generic anime norm too. *shrugs*

Boredom. No, really. Nothing fancy like inspiration or self-expression. Just boredom. I'm sure my art would be a lot better if I took it more seriously or if it had some true, deep meaning behind it, but it doesn't. You can't force depth.

For Rindi_chan

Well to make your self happy you draw what you want and to make others happy you change small things or draw diferent pictures for them entirely. I believe that you do what makes you happy and if people don't like you pics they shouldn't look at them.

And for Touzoku-joou.
You have talents that you use daily and those that you use every so often. the thing is that all those talents have the potential to have a great depth to their use. but you are right, you can not force depth. I rather like your out look at it.

I make art because I just love it. Someone told me that artists usually draw what they feel. I know, sounds funny, but i think it's true. When i'm happy, i draw a pretty friendly picture. When i'm sad, i usually draw a rather depresing picture, when i'm angry, i draw a picture full of anger. Not a graphic, bloody and gory picture, just one of my characters pissed off.

Techniques? I honestly don't know how to explain it. Work on keeping your hand steady, i guess. It just came natural to me, no one ever taught me. I just kept drawing. In my personal opinion, i think that's the best way to learn.

I'd have to kind of agree with Joou here. I can't say I'm really an artist, because I honestly know very little about arts in depth with things like composition and all. I only took 1 vis. arts class once where I learned some interesting stuff, but honestly didn't have much fun and could barely stand the class.

So I just doodle my own stuff for fun.

And to get down ideas, fast images that come to me that just wouldn't look right written down.

Most times, it doesn't work out.

But it keeps my hand moving, and it's fun. :)

With me, it's many things...

1. I love fantasy, but I'm not crazy about reading it. I've never been much of a reader; I've always been more a visual person. Since I don't read much, the only books I liked when I was younger were those mostly containing pictures. Many of the pictures looked really cool, but I'd come up with many ideas and try to put them on paper, based on another's creation. I. E., if I see a really cool looking dragon, I want to draw my own, just to see what I could create.

2. As I look at pictures that I think are really interesting, I sometimes want to see if I can draw it as accurately as it is protrayed. (hence, some of the 'copy' pictures in my gallery) In a way, it's kind of a tribute to the original artist of that picture.

3. Boredom...

Boredom, inspiration, spontaneous urges to create something.

I've always been interested in drawing, though. I've been drawing since I was in kindergarten. I've always been involved in arts ;/
Art, Visual Art, Graphic Arts, Computer Graphics, Photography and I co-taught an Art class for about 2 years at the YMCA.
