I've noticed the little smilies at the bottom of every submission. What's this in aid of? Just curious, that's all.

I thought is was rather self-explanatory. It allows you you vote a picture good or bad.

The tally of these votes will be used in a variety of places in the future. You can sort by votes using the "Score" sort option.

I also added another new feature that you can't see yet but once enough data is collected I think will make a very interesting addition to the site.

Interesting. Hm.

There's no way to see a rating yet, is there? Will there be?

Suggestion: maybe.. disable rating your own pictures?

I don't have it in me to vote "bad" on a picture. It makes me feel disgusted with myself.

Hm. Yes, denis, you'll want to check on the self-voting thing.

As well, there's only 1 vote per user, right??

Will ANYONE get to see these stats? Will an artist get to see the votes on their OWN images?

But it is interesting, and it's fun.
...Is it anonymous, btw?? >>;

Also, somehow... somehow... I just get the feeling that this'll somehow lead to forms of abuse.
But if there's a 1-per user limit, that probably SHOULDN'T be too bad a problem...

Yeah. It remembers if you've already voted.

My thoughts:

- Maybe add a quick text description to the voting options. E.g., instead of just smiley and frowny faces, have a:
Like it? Smile Sad
- Self-voting must be prohibited as a rule. Do not display voting options when viewing own pics.

- Don't show voting options if a user has already voted on the piece they are viewing.

- Maybe add a neutral smiley to provide a middle ground between good/bad.

- Don't let the artist view the total scores for their submissions (don't want people complaining about receiving low overall scores, or what others' opinions are). Simply let them sort galleries by total score. If anyone should be able to see the total score for a piece, I'd say site staff only.

- Maybe add voting options to the gallery pages? (e.g., near the content advisories)

You can vote on your own pictures -- Didn't consider it worth the effort to restrict. Very quickly pictures will have hundreds of votes, one more by the pictures creator will be a drop in the ocean.

Only one vote per user -- you can see for yourself if you try to double vote.

Pictures score (results of votes) is planned to be visible in the future.
Is it anonymous, btw
Not to me Smile But nobody else can see your votes.

neutral smiley can't really work for technical reasons

not showing votes where already voted would be rather resource intensive.

I think the whole rating thing is rather sad, it will probably get a lot of the less experienced artists down.
Or what if you've drawn something that you feel very sensative about? There should definately be an option for the artist to disable voting for at least particular pictures, if not the whole gallery.

Maybe you could have at least a scale of one to five? For accuracy's sake.

And artists should definately be able to see the number of yes and no's they've recieved, or a score, or something, at least on their own picture.

The larger the scale, the easier it is to abuse. (What's the halfway point on a 1-10 scale anyway, seven?)

Related suggestion I posted to the Funart boards: calculate the total score as a percentage or ratio and not an absolute, tug-of-war style number. Then, having a "neutral" option would work because it would tweak the score more towards the center of the scale.

A percentage scale would also eliminate "watcher bias", i.e., an artist with 500 people watching them is far more likely to get 100 "yes" votes than a better artist with only 100 people watching them.

Of course, we're not going to explain exactly how the scoring system works, but one thing I can point out is that pre-existing pictures are initialized to the middle of the spectrum (the 50/50 mark, if you will).

Score is only really relevant within the same category.

Sure a crappy Inuyasha or Naruto picture will probably get a higher score than a really skilled piece of original art, but thats ok because their scores are not being compared.

If people can't deal with criticism, they shouldn't be showing their work off....at all. Its no different than getting negative comments.

A way to view art in order from awesomest to crappiest! Yay! I've been waiting for something like this. Great system, Denis. :thumbs up:

I think it is definately good in those regards. And personally I like it.
My point was simply that some people might not.

Also, I think it should be a persentage, like Stratadrake said, but at the same time the number of votes should have a big deal to do with it. For instance, it is not fair for someone to have one Smile vote and have 100% while one has a whole lot more votes but has a lower percentage.
Ones with the most votes are sure to have a lower score because more people have voted, and even if it is a good pic, there are always those who vote negatively, so while it might not be really low, it would be closer to a middle percent.
Gah...I hope that made sense.

Yes, percentages are easily skewed when the total # of votes is low.

Well . . . we'll just have to see how the system works for now and refine it along the way.

Whenever I try to sort by rating the page just says "No category specified".

There's a reason other sites get rid of this. Just sayin'.

But it does work for some sites. It's at least worth a good test.

Testing this is a good idea. but now to the points made before, this vote thing can be turned off, right? i'm not speaking for any one else when i say this but, i just don't see a relevance to the system with this as an extra way to sort pictures. of course it still needs to be tested and i am willing to go that far before i say it's not good for the users or the system itself.

Thinking of the voting system it states to the users that th eartist is good, right? but good to what sence of artisty? I'm proposing the voting system be tested first to see how it works through, of course. but latter people will want to know at what theme or art type the artist is good at. meaning that there should be votes for these seperate topics of art and what section of art the artist is good at.
But it does work for some sites.
It works for http://pixeljoint.com
Ratings from 1-6 determin the weekly showcase as well as the overall top 100. Ratings used to be from 1-5, but they recently changed it because of all the varying skill levels.
