I got the line art done for a new pic (called Super Mario 3) and felt the need to see what others thought. Seeing as the only people availible are a nine year old boy and his seven year old sister, I asked them what they thought. Josh said "it's sorta okay" OMG and Lorenza said "ummm", she was a little distracted by her barbie game at the time.

I am not taking them to heart or any thing, I find it kind of funny. Dose anyone else have one of those stories about asking the first person you come across about a picture, what did they say?

Ah, I do.
It was a simple picture really, just a profile angled bust of some sorts. I show it to someone and he says, "Wow! I love the pose!"

There was no pose... it was barely showing the shoulders and up. -___-;
Idiot...

Ah, I get that a lot. I recently had this one picture, that everyone seemed to give me weird feedback on. My mum said "It looks like she's going CRAZY!" and my brother said, "It's a girl... with her arm lik this... and some sort of strange burn on her legs."

-.-

In my art class, we had to do this really simple ink design. I had only draw a couple of lines and the girl next to you says, "Wow, you're really good." However, when I finished it, she didn't like it, but other people did.

So many of my boys have been called girls by people who didn't know my art well. >>;
I gave up on correcting them.

That and my dragons have been called horses.

Sometimes people completely get the species of my characters wrong, even when it's obvious things.
I draw foxes and people think they're cats...they have snouts. >=/

And then I draw a cat and someone thinks it's a mouse. Or I draw a caribou and someone thinks it's a dog (I'm not sure how, but my brother did).

LOL ANIMU.

Perhaps this says something about your art style. You can make boys look pretty and male at the same time, BELIEVE IT OR NOT~

Typical anime. Sorry. :/

I kinda like drawing semi-femmy boys though, to be honest... Surprised

mmm... Tomboys.

I love girls with short hair and are athletic/independant/assertive, it almost makes me sympathetic to girls who like girly guys.

I haven't been told that my characters were of opposite gender... yet.

I've had one of my girls mistaken for a guy, but she's a bit boyish anyway. Short hair, jean jacket, non-dynamite build. I think she's look more like a little uke figure from a cliche yaoi manga if she didn't have tits.

Never had a guy mistaken for a girl yet, though.

A few of my male drawings have been confused for females because one has a braid...but the other has a mullet and somewhat built body, so I don't see how he's girly D;

My sister tends to be unnaturally brutal when she critiques my work.... actually she doesn't even critique it T.T she just flat out insults me.

Like one time when I was sketching, she was like "OH THATS COOL!"

When I got done computer coloring it, she was like ". Why do you always have to mess up your good pictures - it was fine until you touched it"

Then when I was doing a collaborated piece with my best friend, my sister saw my best friend's side of the cg, got all impressed... looked at me flatly and said "Now don't mess it up like you usually do,"

I know some people might think it's cute, but I've been drawing for the sake of my sister's pleasure ever since I was a second grader, so it hurts me really badly when she does that. It's actually made me quite depressed on occasions.

Like when I did this picture

http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-256741.html

I was trying to show it to a lesser friend of mine, he decided to do that "Whats good about , what needs work, etc, etc", I was so depressed I was like "I already know what's wrong with it- don't bother T.T"

My funniest critique was when I finished my more recent Yaoi.

http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-495218.html

My mom looked at it carefully and said "......is... is this two guys?"

I quickly packed up my portfolio and ran. XD THAT WAS FUNNY!

My sister once told me a drawing of mine looked like vaginas. I was like Shocked and she said "Well it reminds me of that painting that one girl did of flowers that were vaginas."

Unfortunately I was still confused.

Hmm, will this count as necromancing?? I hope not. :<

Anyway, this made me... snort. It wasn't really much of an offensive pic at all; they guy was just wearing an upside-down cross.
(http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-517445.html for ref)

I got this comment:
i always loved anti-cristes!!!! HATE TO GOD!!!! rate pic 9!
My mom always tells me that I should draw in a more realistic style when I show her my pictures, while my sister says that I should make the eyes and heads on my drawings a lot bigger. I'm so conflicted. Confused

The best answer to that situation is to not listen to either of them and draw in a style you're the most comfortable with. : D

It is always good to practice with realism, though, because it'll give you a better grasp on certain elements that cartoony styles can't always teach you.

1: "The boys are at it again!" That would be the most common thing I get nowadays. This refers to my erotic yaoi.
2: "Wow, that's amazing! That looks like paint!" when in fact, it was in prismacolor colored pencils.
3: "What show is that from, I think I saw that on tv..." What they were referring to was my anime style - my characters are pretty original. And then they point out the show - it happened to be digimon, I think. And then they pointed again at ...I can't even think of the name!
4: "Can I buy that?" No.
5: "Make me a picture of me and my dog!" No.
6: "Is that a girl?" For the last time, NO!
7: "What videogame is that from?" N/A
8: "Ooh, lizards!" Sorry, those are dragon people. Or, "Is that Yoshi?" well, Yoshi is the primary character style for all my original characters...(I've been drawing Yoshi since I was 7, and stopped when I was 13 before I created my characters)
9: Me: "This looks like crap. They look like emaciated birds." You: "Aww, that's so cool, how do you draw so well?" Me: *Falls off chair and knocks the table over in the process* You: "Except that foot looks really tiny, and his head's really big. But still, it's good!" Me: *corner of mouth twitches* "WHAT DO YOU CALL THAT PIECE OF $HIT?" You: "Let's go show this to..."
10: You: *hovers over my shoulder as I draw/color* "What's that? Oh, I see - that's cool!" Me: *gets really nervous, starts to mess up profusely.* You: *continues to hover over my shoulder* Me: *feels the person staring* You: *the silence lingers* Me: *just keep coloring, just keep coloring, just keep coloring, starts swinging legs nervously*

That last part I just have mixed feelings. The worst thing I ever had told to me was from my birth mother, who normally wouldn't have a problem with this before she became over-zealous about her religion. She saw me making my erotic/pornographic drawings of my boy characters Amaya and Astro going at each other many, many times without having a problem with it. Then after she became religious, she started shoving demons down my throat and saying I was just inviting the devil and all these evil things in the house as if they were leaking out from my bedroom where I promised her I'd keep my erotic art.

She got so frightened that she trembled and cried and begged for me to get rid of my art, and I fought back and told her I wasn't going to stop. She suggested I at least put my art in storage, or that I at least change one of my characters into a "woman" - I was so pissed off - this was the stuff you fight hard for. It brought me to tears, I was seriously hurt by it - and the truth is, is there's nothing wrong with any part of my art. She finally came to realize that. "Oh - by golly - what a surprise! Your art's not so bad after all!" And after that, she's been on and off holy-rollin' about me being favored by the man upstairs.

One time (that is, many times here and there) she started crying and screaming for me to change my art, that once I accepted the lord, my art would miraculously change into these 'gentle' paintings of 'gentle' mountains and flower fields instead of my anime male characters romancing and cuddling, the normal erotic yaoi stuff I like and put my feelings into. She would grab her hair and thrash for me to stop! I'm not being dramatic, you would have to be there to see it - I'm so HAPPY I don't live with that lunatic anymore! She's so paranoid that she honestly thought a mafia was trying to kill her - she kept finding all these things in the house where she thought people broke in and implanted listening devices. She put tin foil all over the ceiling - how can someone break into the house when there isn't a trace of breaking and entering? They would have to unscrew the windows from the inside, unlock the broken lock from the inside, break through the amazingly unbroken floor - they were her "Lucifarians", or go through my bathroom window at night where I locked my bedroom door from the inside - the towels I use to block the light from the door crack would have been moved if anyone was trying to get in. She constantly peeled the carped back, and says, "Look Jess, someone pried at this..." She would parade around the house just looking for things to point out - she found something every time.

Paranoia, paranoia, everybody's comin' to get me! Including my demonic art!? What, are you psycho? She denies she's paranoid. She once even thought aliens were the mafia, and she tried making me see a psychotherapist! She denies she needs help! And now that's she's not so zealous about her religion after several let downs and resistance from my stubborn ass, she accepts my art because she can't get over the fact that she can't help but love a rather beautiful woman, herself. She just doesn't like penises, and she's self-ashamed of sex because of her own bad experiences!

She took her problems out on my art. *feels just WONDERFUL for all the support!*
