I just bought myself some clay.
But the thing I don't like is how the colors kinda smear together and how my fingerprints get all over it.

And I'm also having trouble getting the figure to stand.

And then baking it was pretty tough to, it kept falling down in the oven, so, anybody got any suggestions?

I assume you're using Sculpy or Fimo?

As far as the colors go, you can't do much about that. You can paint on both types of clay, so if you want multiple colors it's generally easier to just use white clay and paint it later.

If you're making a figure that's big and/or thin enough to have trouble standing, your best bet is a wire armature. Build the figure out of decently strong wire (depending on how much clay you'll be putting on) and then put the clay over it. You can also use wadded up balls of foil to prop up figures, but the finished result will be more fragile and probably not able to stand on its own.

You also gotta take into account the bottom of the sculpture if it's not attached to a base. The figure needs big enough feet to stand on, as well as being balanced on them.

When it comes to standing things up, you just have to consider balance when designing the figure.
Or you could easily include some form of base.

I can't say much else because I don't know much of baking clay. I use air-drying clay so for things like fingerprints I just smooth over it with water while it's still wet, or sand it down when it's dry.

But yeah, just working with white is easier if you can paint well.
