how do i upload an avatar from my picture? then how do i change it on this site?

You have to go to the mainsite, log in, click on your profile and edit. There is an option in there to change your avatar.

For the avatart to be uploaded and work it needs to be 50x50 pixels, max 20 kb.

64x64 actually.

Avatars are automatically resized as necessary. However, this will break animated ones. So keep animated ones at 64x64 or less.

50x50 is deviantART's avvie size limit. So if I stay within that, I can use the same avvie on there as well as here....
