Manga isn't the only style in the world. My tribute to comicbook art history. if anyone has any, share.
Lesser known artists
Mariah Benes, a professional artist who may be overshadowed by her brother, Ed. She does commission and i might get me one

Dale Keown, creator of the short lived, yet popular series called Pitt. His work is hard to find, it's pretty limited online, but still one of my childhood favorites.

The masters
Michael Turner, an impact artist who inspires even those on the same level as him, such as Jim Lee. I bought a print of his, autographed with the certificate of authenticity. It's really great, just such a great artist, these pictures i found just dont do justice to this mans real talent.

Todd McFarlane. What to really say? the man is going down in history as being one of the most important figures in comic books. His creation, Spawn, became X Men's successor in sales and popularity. Although Mcfarlane would go on to make movies and action figures (McFarlane Toys Inc.) he left his mark with his exit from Marvel Comics and the inception of Top Cow Comics.

Alex Ross, who's style is completely different from any other artist in the comic industry, is widely known for stories such as Kingdom Come. In which he painted every panel in the series. His art is just lovely, easy on the eyes, and awe-inspiring. Definately a man with unique vision and balls of steel to be so different from the rest, and yet be one of the best.

Jim lee, my personal favorite since i was a kid. From what I have seen, he was the man who started the new revolution of comic art style. The first impact artist of modern comics, there is almost noone who does not show even a bit of the style Jim Lee possess'. Most famous for his work on X Men in the early 90's, which probably launched his career into overdrive, and his recent work on Batman and Superman.

I, too, love comic art.
I like the shading style, and the little details.
Those are some awesome artist you've got there James. I knew some them, even before you posted them here. That makes me proud. _________________ I came

It would have been better if you made few threads per artist but... :v _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

Sam Kieth. a large part of the reason i got into comics. The first book that caught my eye was drawn by kieth, a wolverine series, called Bloodlust. One of the more down-right and dirty stories, really matching this art style. Describing it, the first word i think of is... hallucinogen. let him get his hands on the writing, and you'll understand what i mean. But still, you can tell from his art. Another artist with a unique style.

Mad. Watch this man, he's leading the new wave of drawing style. Joe Madureira uses his impact art style to its fullest. he doesnt play by the rules. he uses cartoon-like style and an amazing CGing team as his primary weapons. His character designs never fail to catch attention. He pushes detail on you like noone else can. You can just tell he is loving every moment he spends at the drawing table.

Joe Jusko made a pretty big national boom by painting Marvels first Marvel Masterpeice 100 card set series in 1992. Each painting was amazing, and so different from what collectors were normally used to. His realism and attention to anatomy is in its own class.

Marc Silverstri. Now, this. is. the. man. his next mission is taking over the world. I remember when he was young and having fun illustrating Wolverine. Short afterwards he moved on and, with a few other amazing artists, created their own industry which hit the ground running. Due to he and his teams popularity, there was no doubt about Top Cows success right off the bat.

These were just a few of the artists i looked up to for inspiration when i needed it. there are many more who have helped produce the beautiful artwork in comics over the years. Men, such as the great Jack Kirby of the golden age, have shared similar importance to the art. Not to be overlooked. Each of these artists give their own gratitude to the masters of the era's before them. They were the original role models for young artists such as Silvestri, McFarlane, and Lee. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

I've always admired comic book art, it really is extremely detailed. I'd LOVE to be able to do anything even remotely as good as most comic book artists but I know I would fail miserably. Thus is life I suppose. I can always dream.
Seems like there is a lack of appreciation for these type of artists. It's a shame. People need to learn to love all styles. <3 |

actually, they have plently of fans. More and more comicbook movies are coming out in threatres. And there is a very large fanbase and loyal collectors. It's just that there are so many people online drawing manga that its just so popular. I just wanted to try and bring more attention to comic art here on FAC. Thnx, everyone who took interest I'm also making this into an article. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

hehe, I was actually refering to the online populous and the manga boom that's taken over. Many of my real life friends are comic nerds. I was being a bit too general. Many youths today are very manga obsessed and they don't really get to grow up on our Americanized comic-style art. I like both styles of art but a lot of people seem to only be open to one or the other. Not sure if my point is being conveyed quite right. Curse my lack of conversational skills.
<3 Mad's work, by the way. Gorgeous. |

ah, well even I love the manga style. though its all the same, only differences between characters are hair color and outfits. I try to draw in that style, but there's lack of inspiration, since every artists style can only be defined pretty much by the way they CG. There's bigger differences between artists, but i'm just speaking generally. But especially about animes. With comicbook art, you're free to draw the way you feel best.
And yes, Mad is very awesome. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

Finally, some appreciation for comic book art... I wanted to start a HAILSIMONBISLEY rant somewhere here once but couldn't figure out where to put it... I just figured there was no place in the FAC forums for non-manga comicbook lovers ;_; _________________

someday i'd like to talk about putting a comicbook section on the fourms, like the A/M section. just waiting to see if we'd have enough interested members. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

Wow. I've seen most of these artists in comics I've read, and you've picked out some of the best of the best. There are a few artists I'd add, but they really aren't artists whom have been doing it for so long (these include David Finch, Salvador Larocca, Mike Deodato, etc...) Joe Quesada is also a good artist...
About the comic forum section... DO IT! PLEASE! |

This thread is very important, my thanks to unfocused for starting it. After I joined this site I quickly noticed that just about everyone was a devout anime fan. That is by no means a bad thing, I just would of liked to see more comic fans. Marc Silverstri, Alex Ross, Jim Lee and all the other artists mentioned here are comic art pioneers. I think Frank Miller should also get some credit, since he is the man most responsible for bringing comics out of their fantasy funk in the 80's and really setting the bar for all the comic creators to come after him. American comics are starting to gain some well-deserved respect and acceptance. This is most visible in cinema. I agree that there should be a seperate forum section just for comics on this site. |

I'm probably one of the wierdest chicks you'll ever meet. I have a bigger comic book collection than you, probably. Been collecting it since I was 8. I love comic book art and fully support it...and my terrible habit. _________________ Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to.
