Yoshitoshi ABe (B capitalized) has rocked the world of Anime/Manga fandom since 1998, since his creation of Lain. His unique, European influenced style has influenced many, such as the "Shrinking of the anime eyes" syndrome since the late 90's.
He is an unusual artist because he does not use rulers for any of his drawings, which someone might accuse of him of not being accurate, but the audience agrees that his art is more flowing and natural that way. He started as a doujinshi artist. (1994) Doujinshis is a short, large-printed mangas that are usually a parody or yaoi, but all of his doujinshis have been originals.
His work became so popular among artists, his original doujinshis (that's right, non-professional, independant, tidbits) has been turned into succesful animes! never has this happened in Japan before, his most famous doujinshis are:
Furumachi (August, 1996)
Shooting Star (December, 1996)
White Rain (July, 1997)
Sui-Rin (August, 1998)
Charcoal Feather Federation (Haibane Renmei) (December, 1998)
T.Prevue Version 0.9 (August, 1999)
Faces (December, 1999)
K.S.M.E (July, 2000)
Sketches (December, 2000)
NieA Under 7 - Under (August, 2001)
Haibane Renmei - The Haibanes of Old Home (Ch.1) (August, 2001)
Haibane Renmei - The Haibanes of Old Home (Ch.2) (December, 2001)
Haibane Renmei - Haibane Lifestyle Diary (August, 2002)
Haibane Renmei - The Haibanes of Old Home (Extra) (December, 2002)
Ryuu Tai (July, 2003)
Not Found (December, 2003)
Haibane Renmei - Kyakuhonshuu - Volume 1 (August, 2004)
Haibane Renmei - Kyakuhonshuu - Volume 2 (December, 2004)
Haibane Renmei - Kyakuhonshuu - Volume 3 (December, 2004)
(doujinshi dates from wikipedia.com, my one-dimensional god)
His medium of color is Ambiguous... It is not clear what his favorite medium or art program is.
This is his earliest work, 1994. Would you have thought that he would become one of the greates character designer of Japan from looking at this?
In 1998, He got a big break from his doujinshi, Serial Experiment Lain, the queen of phychological drama anime.
He then moved to a light-hearted comedy, Niea_7, about an alien girl living in another girl's wardrobe.
But, his single greatest creation would probably be Haibane Renmei, aka Charcoal Feather Confederation, a story about dozens of pseudo-angels living among human population, waiting for the day of "Emancipation"

He also participated in many covers of magazines, books, and illustrations.

His newest character work was for the series "Texhnolyze" (2003) which was unfortunately panned by critics for ABe's lack of participation in the series. (He did the designs and left)
His artbooks are available through Pioneer (now Geneon) publishing, his anime contributions, Serial Experiment Lain, Niea_7, and Haibane Renmei is also available through Geneon
PS, there is supposedly some ABe's contribution in the new "Robots" artbook by Range Murata, check it out!
PSII, Please share your updates, my errors, and the artist's pictures if you want to! _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

Currently moe'ing over Haibane Renmei.
3 months and no replies!
I'm getting bunch of art books from Nippon export (or yes Asia, depends on who's more Asian) for Christmas, my list currently...
Other than a shota manga from my favorite artist, tsukumo gou  (just because the coloring & figure is so damn good)
http://www.nippon-export.com/catalog/produ...oducts_id=13845
I'm getting 2 of the three anime-related ABe artbooks.

either lain, haibane renmei or Niea_7
But you don't care!

I care - I just don't have much to say on the subject. I think ABe's work is fantastic, and I always meant to watch Texhnolyze simply because he did the character designs, but everyone says that series failed... Maybe I should just try to finish up watching Niea_7. It's a fun series, but I somehow stopped watching it.
Interesting. I didn't realize ABe got his start as a doujinshi artist. That's pretty fantastic. Makes me think of that guy who did Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star) - he made a 15-minute anime movie just by using his own computer... It did really well, so he went on to make a full-length movie.
Wow, asking for art books for Christmas. What a concept. Heh, sadly, I've never had an interest in art books... If it's ABe though, I'm sure it's worth it. ^_^
EDIT: On a completely unrelated note, I just noticed that you made the starting post on my birthday. Aw. |

Aw... :graywub:
anywho, I heard he only started drawing when he was in the 20's, also, he never uses rulers to make lines. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |
