Another spoiler: PETA actually kill more animals than they "save".

70-80% of the cattle they released from farms are too starved to actually live more than a day outside. So they die from weakness, trampling each other, dehydration and starvation.

The whole storys pretty sad but they can't just do nothing. They uphold thier end of the bargain by releasing them but the farmers keep them in such a bad state, they'll die. And as you say, it's not all of the cows. And they won't die instantly, anyway. At least thier last days are actually as natural and carefree as what your God intended.

There's a difference between being aware of oneself and being aware of one's environment. While I am unsure weather all animals are capable of self awareness, it's safe to say that more.. derived organisms, such as primates (INCLUDING HUMANS), are self aware.

I didn't watch the video, but Throttle mentioned self awareness. I don't think anyone's going to argue that animals don't know about what's going on outside themselves.
