So some of us are getting to the point of moving out of our parents house and/or moving in to new places with friends or such.
I'm hoping that starting this thread will help some of us who haven't done this before o.o Hoping to get some advice and such from those of you who are out and on your own already.
What mistakes did you make? What would you have done better, etc? How old were you and why did you move out when you did?
And I just want to hear what you guys think about when the whole "moving out" topic comes up. Are you excited, where are you going, who do you plan to move out with, etc etc. |

I dont know if this counts but. I moved to a different state. And I left my friends, school, and other things I adored. Yes, I made many mistakes, but I also made alot of friends! |

I'm talking more about moving out on your own o.o
Like....
My friend Jenni (Jenniberry) and I are planning on moving out together next year.
If we have 2 other roomates we'll get a house in San Ramon, but we may also just live in this house in Santa Rosa on her dad's property (I'd like to go to San Ramon personally...)
Until then, she's moving out of her parents house with me and my family, so..it's kind of like a test-run in us living together.
I want to hear what you think about moving out (if you're not planning on it anytime soon/have moved out)
What do you think about leaving your parents and such and living on your own? This includes the responsibilities of getting a job in order to pay bills, shop for groceries, etc. |

Good luck then :-)
I moved out when I was 17, and have had a few places since then. Any advice to pass on? Hmmm...
Don't try and be cool in front of your friends by leaving much loved but embarrassing teddies, books, pyjamas etc behind. When you're down you'll need them, and until then you can hide them under the bed
Make sure you have things to stick on the walls. Nothing makes a place feel more like home.
You can never have too many cups or teaspoons. And you may put off buying them, but you will end up needing an iron and a hoover.
Forget the fancy cleaning products - if you're on a tight budget buy bleach. Trust me - I have to clean up some pretty nasty things as part of my job, and bleach has never failed me.
Hope that helps |

I just moved into my dorm this afternoon. Typing this from my new laptop. I don't have an instant messenger right now but hope to remedy that soon, so to anyone hoping to talk to me, sorry. <_< _________________

Advice? Well, if you have an idea of when you really want to move out, and add that in to when you might be able to make it happen, start saving up money at least a year before it!
I'm starting to look at things actually now and put them in storage. My parents just got some new funiture so the old stuff i'll be able to take more than likely with me when i move out. So that's like $3,000 right there i don't have to spend! *throws arms up in air, yes!* Try and buy things that your going to need before you move though, and jsut keep tem packd up in a safe place.
I'm saving up for a decent, good set of pots and pans. Nothing real fancy but nothing that's going to fall apart on me either. My mom mentioned something once about probably letting me have her dishes i got her awhile back. My parents are into buying cookware s**t though. They have all sorts so if they give junk to me, they get to buy more stupid but i won't say no. Although, i will be saving up for my own set, seeing as i'm looking to have 1, if not two or three room mates. In which case, we'll be needing more dishes
Buy a vacuum, nothing real fancy but don't get something that's a piece of s**t either. Last thing you want when you move out is a bad vacuum that breaks down on you. Especially when your just moving in and have to clean the place out (you don't know what kind of people where there before so yes, sweep, and wipe the place down, good!) Something my mom made sure to teach me since she moved like yearly as a kid, so i got myself clear on that from her telling me and such.
Don't go buying funitire and stuff you don't have. Personally, i could go without furniture. Everyting in my room, going with me, all mine. But i don't need a tv set and everything. Just take what's needed, and save, save, saveeee!!
I'm going to be working my ass of this year with saving. I a have a huge list of things to save up for. Two jobs better do it too! Oh, and and if you want to practice paying bills, and not just your cell phone bill <_< try and arrange something with your parents to pay the electric bill. Moving out on your own into your own place without really paying bills like that can really nail you in the ass and hurt your bank account if your not use to it, to put it bluntly

Let's see..
I moved out when I had just turned 17. It wasn't really a hard adjustment. It's nice to get out on your own and escape the parents. My only advice is.. if your gonna move out make sure you do it right and have all your bases covered. You for sure have money for rent and a secure job and such.. because if ya mess up and can't pay your bills it would be horrible having to move back in with parents
Also make sure to communicate well with your roomate. The smallest things can turn into fights... which can turn into a search for a new roomate quickly.. :)

whoa o.o;;; thanks, I hadn't thought about that part.
Yeah, I'll be saving for about a year and couple of months before we actually move out. (I want to have a minimum of $5000)
but I've also got to save up for.... T.T;;;; 100 other things...

Oh yes. Mother always made sure to explain that one to me. She always told me when you moved to do the following.
Before moving anything into the place and unpacking it all, sweep/vacuum the floors. Mop the floors (kitchen, bathroom) clean the windows. Clean the cabinets with 409, wipe them good, shelf for shelf (trust me, i've seen some things people put in their cabinets and s**t ) And if possibly, get the liner stuff at target that you can cut and line the cabnets with, always a good idea and the stuff is cheap. Dust all the vents that airconditioning and heating and such come through. Run a damp clothe (hot water) around the window frames and door frames (it's a good idea actually although it might not sound important, it generally is)
I don't like the sound of the vacuums all to well either. And i generally hate running them with other people around. If they annoy me, who's to say they don't others, and it makes me uneasy (because i feel rude) running them around others for that fact i guess. When i do though, i blast metallica
A few things i plan on having when i move out.
Pots n Pans, silverware, dishes, glasses, cooking utensils (your normal stuff, nothing fancy), vacuum or broom, depending on wether the place has carpet or wood floors (which most do) some of those ant things to kill them to set around the pplace (the small triangular shaped ones, trust me, you'll want some of them) dish soap, bottle of 409, toilet cleaner (people are so dirty i don't trust them to clean the place on their way out like i've been taught) as well as some strong ass tile cleaner or what not for the bathroom I'm f**king scrubbing the place down before i shower and s**t in a new, strange bathroom. a mop, towels, dish clothes, and other small bits n bobs really.
I don't care for furnitire like i said, i'd wait awhile for that kind of things. And i all ready have a tv, dvd player and all that s**t. |

I have... a bed that won't fit anywhere, some massive furniture that belonged to my grandmother, a computer that barely runs microsoft word, a printer that does not print...
But a very large collection of CDs and music-related DVDs. Yeah I'm screwed- I mean set.
Note to self: Turn off the guns n' roses and get a job.
...Later. Like after the A to Z show....Or maybe next week...and not in November, 'cause I'll be busy saying "Yep, told ya so, no new CD..."

another 5 RPPs to Lasher for more good advice and similar cleaning habbits as me n.n lol
2 for Fallen since she watches A to Z lol n.n
Yeah, thankfully Jenni's family gave her tons of furnature already n.n same with dishes and stuff (although truthfully.....I really want to buy new dishes o.o)
I've lived in such a crowded house all my life and we've never had "nice" things like good pots/pans, cups (most of our "cups" are mugs T.T;;;;; they don't break as easy.....), nice silverware (I bought a whole bunch a couple of months ago, but they're already messed up... same with cups, they're already all broken), blenders and stuff like that.
One of the reasons I want to move out is so I can have nice things like that.
One of the reasons I don't want to is missing the comfort of knowing the house like the back of my hand. I've lived here for over 13 years o.o;;
I'm going to get so homesick lol |

Beds are a pain in the, er, neck to move around. Sometimes it's just easier to buy a new bed and have it delivered. Or one of those futon beds... I ended up giving a perfectly servicable double bed away because I couldn't afford to move it.
Which brings me on to bed linen. Another thing you can't have too much of, and don't buy garish stuff you hate either. Apart from your walls you bed linen will probably be the biggest expanse of colour in your room, so make it nice. You need at least two sets, but three is better, since sheets are a b*st*rd to dry.
Extra cushions and pillows are good to have if you're likely to have people sat on the floor. If you can pick up cheap beanbags do so.
Make sure the property has fire alarms, and make sure you test them. If you have to take the batteries out, please don't forget to put them back in. Carbon Monoxide indicators are also good, and they aren't expensive. I also like to have a little fire extinguisher, but that's probably going a little over the top My job makes me very safety conscious, but hey, I'm still alive.
Oh, and insure your stuff. There are lots of policies around aimed at studenty types, have a look at those. It needn't be expensive. Of course, if you do get robbed you could always defned yourself with that fire extinguisher.

I've moved 2 times. Russia -> Singapore -> Canada.
Both times the placxe which I moved to was better than the one I left.
And now because I've grown up in 3 countries, I feel like I have no nationality whatsoever. I belong wherever I am, I guess. Which I really don't have a problem with. ^__^ I fit in wherever easily too. |

One thing Raymei, when you buy dishes and things and live in a house hold like yours. It would be wise to keep them packed up in their boxes in closet or storage facility even, nice and safe for when you move out, and they can be used properly and kept around longer and in bette condition. lol. I'm going to start buying dishes and pots and pans, but i'm only taking them out of the boxes to make sure there is no damage to them or reason for me to return them.
The dishes i got my mom last christmas was from i think cooking.com, and i got them on sale to. Real nice, but not to fancy. One box though (i got two sets, 4 dishes, cups, bowls come in one) Had a bunch of plates broken becayse the way they were packed. We sent them back and got a new set back later in their replace. That's the only reason i'd check is for reason to send them back or return them. I always look at places like cooking.com or what not that are selling things specifically to that area for good quality stuff, but i also find a lot on sale. One thing i know how to do is wait for something good to go on sale. I remember seeing this 10 pieces set of pots n pans that were like $500 dollars and would last me years, go on sale for half price. To bad i didn't have the money for it. That's something i wouldn't mind putting money into. I could just go to target but you know what, even their nice stuff will fall apart or what not after two years lol. So might as well spend a little extra for something that will last much longer and can with stand more abuse.
Hey, never know when you'll need a good frying pan to smack over someones head. Where i come people do it a lot. Mom's close friend use to have arguing parents. Dad was wailing on the mom one night when she was sleeping over, and the older sister came home from and date, walked in, picked up the frying pan and knocked him out "Keep your hands off her you bastard" Was all mom said she said to him before putting the pain down and walking past them to go upstairs and get ready for bed Yeah, that's kind of normal from my home town area <_<
lol. |
