There doesn't seem to be a topic for Jrock/Jpop yet so I might as well start one.

I hardly ever hear from people who are fond of Japanese rock or pop here in the FAC community. I wonder why that is...

Well anyone here enjoy Japanese music (or any foreign music for that matter)? Any favorite songs or bands?

I never listened to J-pop or J-rock because they were Japanese. I just liked some songs and I continued looking for songs from them.

Come to think about it, I listened to Japanese songs long before I listened to music of my native language or English, how about that?

I don't tend to like mainstream stuff, but I do like female singers like Sakamoto Maaya, Hitomi Yaida and Shiina Ringo.

I never understood the appeal of Visual Kei.

I'm over the period of listening to soley Japanese music, I listen to French music more often now. (mostly because it helps me with comprehension skills) If I'm learning Japanese at the level I'm tackling French, I'd probably revive some of my old CD's again and listen to them, and try to make words out of them.

In short, Japanese music is pretty much like every other music expected of a developed nation. Wide variety of styles and artists. It's not necessarily better than any others.

I like J-rock and J-pop. I don't realy have any favorites. I like Malice Mizer and Gackt. Megumi Hayashibara and Ayumi Hamasaki are cool too.

I like Visual kei...it's so purty. Plus think about it. It's just dang funy to watch a bunch of grown men wear skirts and knee socks.

Im more of a fan of J-pop. Lollipop and all. (Like UNDER17 and BerryZ Koubou) But my favorite Japanese Artists would have to be T.M Revolution, Rurutia, Sakamoto Maaya, Onitsuka Chihiro, Matsuura Aya, Any Hello!Project group, and so on and so forth.

I do like the rock, although Ive never FULLY been drawn to the visual rock. It is beautiful. When it comes to Jrock I like Ellegarden (If you consiter them rock, although theyre punk Blah ), Gazette, Malice Mizer, Schwarz Stein, Blam Honey, and of course good old fashioned Dir en Grey. :B

Woo yay!

I was curious when a thread like this would be started. Considering almost 3/4ths of the FAC community is anime based.

I don't really see much of a need to differentiate the two myself. The "Rock" tends to have more prepubesant obsessive fangirls for the visual kei thing and the Pop has..the same thing, and a few more guys. I tend not to care about the musicians playing, so whatever sounds good is fine by me. I tend to lean towards older man artists (Masayoshi Yamazaki <3) and females myself, I'm Gay for Shiina Ringo amongst other things. :3

I have a question-Why isn't it just called "Rock" or "Pop"? A language shouldn't need it's own subgenre- Then again, the whole "Anime/Cartoon" thing comes to mind. lol, foreigners.

Whichever category has more instruments and thoughtful lyrics(i've taken three years of japanese), and less flowery synth and looping.

Indeed, I was wondering myself why no one had started a Jrock/pop topic yet.

Now hearing more stuff about Visual Kei, it's making me think. I'm familiar with it and at the same time I'm not. Yeah, I've heard about it and I know little itsy bitsy bits and pieces about it but I don't have a solid description.

As for me, I don't think I posted my oppinion yet...

I'm definately one for Jrock. Jpop is nice and all but most of it is just too bubbly for me.
Also along the topic of Jpop, I find it hilarious when someone states they're a real Jpop fan after hearing "Simple and Clean" dubbed in English for the first time.

Okay, back on topic here.
I like quite a few singers and bands actually. Especially Gackt, Malice Mizer, and Miyavi. I also like Pierrot and Gazette.

I'd choose Jrock over just about any type of music any day. <3

Hey, I've listened to more than simple and clean. The simple fact that I have her new japanese album Ultra Blue and her last 6 singles might change your opinion of me being just a Kingdom Hearts fanatic.

You're mention of Utada Hikaru brought that up. I wasn't referring to you in general.
It's great to see someone has actually made the effort to branch outside her ever-so-popular song.

The majority of music I listen to is Jrock.
Bands like Vidoll, Gazette, Nightmare, D, GHOST, Inugami Circus-Dan, MISSA, deadman, lynch., Phantasmagoria, GULLET, 12012, Dolly, Asymmetry, Clothoid+Doll, Kana, Onmyouza, Kagerou, ect ect.
(Wow, I didn't realize how many bands I just spouted off.)

Of course I'm typically into the harder stuff, but I'll listen to Malice Mizer, Psycho le Cemu and Pink Hallelujah any day. <3

Utada Hikaru, Gackt, Gir In Grey, and others...

And Even Though He's not j-rock/pop, I still think he's AWESOME! He's the Greatest Composer in the world, and he composed nearly all Final fantasy Music, He's Nobuo Uematsu... w007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nobuo Uematsu is hardly the Greatest Composer in the world. Game Music, maybe. He only has two or so note worthy songs out of everything he's done. Most of the other stuff is along the lines of the "In one ear out the other" classification.

In terms of "Legendary Composers", Uematsu is hardly worth mention in my book. I put Go Shiina in that category myself.

Slightly more on topic, I like R&B in japanese, too. PHONETICS SEX. m-flo and Ken Hirai are two artists I like. :V
