Slipknot is metal.
Sorry, the guitars, bass, and especially the drums prove that they are very much "metal". They use the same guitar techniques as Pantera, bass follows the guitar, and the drums are spectacular. Futhermore, they're not soft rock, they're not hard rock, and they're not screamo. They're not rap. They're not hip hop. They're not R & B. They're not alternative, and they're not polka. So unless there's some forbidden genre we're not allowed to discuss, Slipknot is metal by today's standards, unlike Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Judas Priest.
If you listen to a Slipknot song, you will hear metal technique in practically everything they do. They pull off "metal" quite well.
Now, you might not think they're good metal, but that's another thing entirely.
Breaking Benjamin is hard rock, and I really have the urge to argue that Disturbed is too, especially after hearing their newest stuff, including a cover of a Genesis song. They're not really sticking to their older sound anymore, at least in their choices of singles. |

Black Sabbath was the first band to exclusively downtune to C# because Tony Iommi lost the tips of his fingers in an industrial accident.
As far as screaming goes, at least it goes with what's going on, unlike screamo. |

Uhg.
Please, don't argue on what's metal and what's not. Always this arguement. Should have just said post your favorite bands, but there was already a thread on that.
By all standards, Slipknot and Disturbed is considered Metal. Regardless of how they sound in the recent stuff. Most bands will have at least one or two albums that will make you question them a bit.
Some say that Hatebreed is Metal. But that more fits in Hardcore. Or something.
Either way, if you were to judge the music by what category it's in.. that's no fun.
I'm not saying any of you do. xP Don't worry.
I know people that had desided they hate Linkin Park because some other person said, "omg they r emo" and now will hate any band just because they fit under the "Emo" Category. It's really quite.. stupid.
There is arguements about Goregrind and Brutal Death Metal. You can say one is Goregrind, then they'll say that no, it's BDM. Just on going. xD
If I were to be honest, I don't know how Black Sabbath is Metal. It's old Metal yeah, but it's so soft next to what I listen to now. I'm always questioning how Ozzy became the first or best. Or whatever he is. But hey, it's just my opinion. As everyone has their's. x)
Just means we're not walking around like robots.
Besides, I did say Normal Metal, ect. So that means go into rock as well. ^-^ _________________ -- sig removed by moderator -- |

Yeah I know. =P
It was just to attempt to save a future arguement on it. There is normally always one that will try to start one. _________________ -- sig removed by moderator -- |

Slipknot are posers! The guitarist learned a few powerchords and how to jump up and down. The vocal dude aint bad but hes no metal dude to me! True metal aint about dudes in masks smashing stuff and screaming their heads off! _________________

Yeah, wrong.
By the way, it's "poseur".
Sorry, but Slipknot's guitarists(plural) can riff like motherfuckers.
Oh, and Jim Root is the lead guitarist in Stone Sour, and he can shred. Want proof? Listen to "Get Inside". |

Ozzy (and if you don't agree with him, Dio works too), Led Zep, and the like have the distinction of being "first, best, or whatever" because they have genuine musical, melodic talent. Ozzy's is debatable in recent years, what with all the accusations being thrown around from everyone involved, but he's got the showman reputation. First does not make someone best, no, part of why I don't care for Hendrix, the Beatles, Elvis, and so on.
But what does change is where the direct influence and evolution comes from. The birth of metal had much more influence from melodic rock, Ozzy worships the Beatles, just made more heavy. Led Zep, Sabbath, Dio, all very melodic. Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and the various lesser known acts too.
More recently, "metal" acts inspired by the originators have stripped away most of the melody and "musical" aspects and adopted the harsher...in my view shittier sound of today. Is that metal? Not how it was originally defined or created.
Metal is one of those broad terms, just under the bigger spectrum of "rock", but it still needs additional definition to specify what one's talking about. If you say "name your favorite rock bands", you can technically name anything from the Rolling Stones to Pantera to Poison to Korn. Lame. "Metal" has lost its specific meaning as much as "punk" has.
Most of the bands named are nu metal. Plain and simple. They sound kinda like classic metal, in the same way Blink 182 kinda sounds like the Clash. Maybe. If you're partially deaf.
If Sabbath and Led Zep sound "so much softer" than what you listen to...that's a good sign that what you're listening to isn't the precise definition of metal but rather some offshoot evolution of it that needs a new name to distinguish itself. Just not one of those faggy ones people pull out of their ass to classify a couple bands. Goregrind. Wtf.
There's a reason 80s pussy rock is called "hair metal" and not "metal". Including "metal" at all is a bit tongue in cheek to begin with.
Oh, and AC/DC aren't metal by any name or definition.
Anyway, carry on with the nu metal drooling. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
