Hetalia (short for 'Hetare Italia') is actually a popular Japanese webcomic. In it, various countries have been personified so each country is represented by, you know. A person. ~~omg craaack~~

It was originally about northern Italy's ridiculous antics during the early parts of WW2, and its poor ally, Germany. Since it's about, well, WW2, there's a lot of people who dislike it as well ("how can you make a comic intended for humour about the third reich, omg", "that time period was NOT funny, thousands and thousands of people died", etc), but I find it pretty amusing. (L) Even if it's not totally historically accurate.

It's long since expanded to include other countries, and a lot of it isn't about world history any more. Modern events like global warming are being included (I... I kinda cry and laugh a little when I see Canada x the G8 summits) and it's actually really funny as well as vaguely informative at the same time.

It's popular enough to get a volume of it published recently, too.

Oh, and since a lot of the countries are represented by male characters, there's a lot of BL undertones, too. Getting annexed/attacked = sexual harassment, lololol
