I always liked the Scary Stories to tell in the Dark series. The illustrations by Alvin Swartz are damned freaky if you ask me.

If ya ask me, you can never go wrong with Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice. Its not super gory like a Stephen King book would be but it certainly isn't corny. Its a "smart read" actually. In other words, its intellectually pleasing and very awesome. Its basically a book told from a vampire's point of view. It can be kind of depressing at times but believe you me, you will LOVE the main characters of these books. There's one vampire, Lestat, who's so frickin' evil and yet people still love him! ^_^ All of The Vampire Chronicles are very good but as a warning note, after IwtV, there is a lot of yaoi so if I were you, I'd stop at IwtV. But seriously, its a great book and ya shouldn't miss out on it. Lol! OH! I JUST remembered some books that I read when I was your age! They were GREAT horror books too. Hmmmm...*Tries to remember the titles* There was...

Bury Me Deep by Christopher Pike (very good mystery thriller. VERY creepy)

Monster by Christopher Pike (kinda confusing. Pretty scary though and it starts off with a BANG! if ya know what I mean...*its not perveted, just to say*)

Remember Me by Christopher Pike (Oh my God! I loved this book when I was thirteen! Its got such a twist that would put M. Night Shamylan to shame!)

Pet Sememtary by Stephen King (Okay, I know what you're thinking. Too much for ya to take, right? Well, in terms of sex and blood, its not that bad. But just as a warning, its VERY disturbing. You'd think that from the title, it wouldn't be but believe me, I cried when I read it. Its a hard read but if you are looking for a good scare, then I suggest you read this. I honestly will NEVER read it again because it freaked me out so badly but you can handle it. I read it when I was thirteen so twelve should be able to handle it too.)

GAH! I know I'm forgetting some. But I can't remember any of them right now. <_< Oh well...this should be enough to satisfy ya, right? Lol! Laughing I really do recommend any novel written by Christopher Pike. He's really an author for your age group and his novels are very good. I haven't read all of them 'cuz once I turned fourteen, I turned over the darker side of Stephen King (which if you are a horror fan, then you will be all set for the rest of your life!) When you do decide that you're ready for Stephen King, I strongly suggest 'Salem's Lot (which is all about vampires. My favorite SK novel so far!) and The Shining (his best-written book by far. And the movie with Jack Nicolson is very good too.) Well, I have to go now. I hope you decide to read these novels. They are all very good and would really fill your need for horror and crud like that! TTFN, ta ta for now!

I really liked RL Stein's Fear Street books when I was 12/13-ish. And I think it's Christopher Pike had a good series about vampires my friends and I passed around...can't remember what it was called cause I wasn't allowed to get any, just had to borrow from my friends. Sliverwolf is completely right about Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and she's also got the totally awesome Ramses the Damned and the Mayfair witches series which is supposed to be really good, I just haven't had time for them yet. And her sister has a series about Werewolves that I've also heard recommended. Also, Bram Stoker's Dracula is a good read if you can get through it. It's hard and he's not the best writer but the story is good if you can get through the writing. Continuing the Vampire theme that seems to have developed whether you wanted it or not, Christine Yarbro has a series about the vampire Count St.-Germain that's decent. Haven't read much of it though. You could always just go for some straight-up ghost stories, there's about a million compilations. good luck, and let us know what you think is good, I'm always looking for something good to read!
