Has anyone played this? It allows you to make your own adventure game. Isn't that cool?

I don't think "game" is the right word to describe it with....

I've "played" the first RPG Maker, and while it was admittedly rather limited it was quite interesting. Its built-in quest was a lovely parody of every RPG you've ever played

I spent a few hours modding part of the built-in quest so that when yo utalked to this certain NPC, you went into battle and got killed, then it started over from the beginning of the scene (dj vu).

I also spent about five hours on the first one coding like 10 minutes of gameplay for some story that I thought up completely on a whim: Ship on the high seas gets attacked by ghosts. Captain fights the ghost (stalemate, ends after a few turns), then calls in his mates to fight the ghost (they win), then the ghost calls in some allies and totally wipes the floor with them, then your main character (a mere boy, like them all) stumbles into trouble, gets KO'ed by the lead ghost and thrown overboard. He wakes up on a small shoretown hamlet of sorts. It was fun because, let's face it, how often in an RPG do you see your party lose?

I'll have to keep my eyes open for RPG Maker 2 somewhere.

I tried out rpg maker 2000, but I didn't like it. There is also an rpgmaker 2001 out but it's basicly the same as 2000, but more complicated. Although better than rpgmaker 1, still the games feel very static and very limited. And it still takes too much time to book results. A nice extra of rpgmaker2000 is to convert it to an exe file that installs the game without the need of the actual rpgmaker game. Someone should make a FAC rpg Very Happy

That would be fun! ... Hmm... I should try that out when I have the time...

A couple days ago I downloaded RPG Maker 2003 ... figuring things out on my own because it came with no help, but it's kinda fun! Smile

I just had an excellent idea! Someone should start a fac server for ut or ut2004 (which I would prefer) and we could have matches like OS versus the mods and newbs versus regulars, or just plain deathmatch. But it'll never happen because everybody wants to play some final fantasy on a console Sad So a fac rpg would be the next best thing.

Umm... I think he's talking more about RPG Maker 2 for the PS2 than just any generic RPG-making suite (including those for the PC).

Bottom line, it simply isn't easy to create an RPG, no matter how limited or powerful the toolset is. On one hand you have a very flexible, comprehensive toolkit that allows you to do anything under the sun -- but you're in charge of all the sweatwork. And on the other hand, you have a simpler, easier-to-use toolkit that doesn't require as much blood and work to create something with, but the end result ofwhich is horribly limited and you simply can't do everything you want it to do.

On the other hand I could make a FAC level (a very basic one though) with unrealED for UT2004. UnrealED, now THAT is a difficult to use tool used by professional game producers. Splinter cell and americas army for example were made in unrealED. Much better than rpg makers and stuff like that.

Splinter Cell was? Interesting.

I have UnrealED, just never used any Editor application from any of my games. Well, other than StarcraftED. Rolling eyes I should try it out sometime.

be sure to use unrealED3.0, all the previous versions don't have the advanced gadgets the new one has.

Other games made in unreal ed you might know of (and I can think of right now):

Pariah (upcoming title)
Lineage2
the newest tribes game
unreal2 and ut2003/4

But to do that you need a whole team of people and programmers to modify the engine a little. One person could make a nice level given enough time, but it takes a lot of it. I can make ugly 1 on 1 levels fast enough I suppose, but still don't fully understand everything, just enough to do easy stuff. Even a small level is an incredible amount of work, you have to make the level itself, but also the botpaths (which takes a LOT of testing), checking for errors like textures not alligned, and worst of all... emitters. Pretty much everything that moves around but not really part of the level, like lights, water, particles in the air, clouds, steam, electrical sparks. That takes so much fine tuning, in most custom leves it's the emitters that look weird. Maybe if I feel like wasting even more time than I do now, I'll start on an easy DM level for UT2004 with imported textures from FAC stuff, or like a gallery of the avatars, that would be funny, and wouldn't be rediculously huge in filesize.

Of course it could be done easily if I just edited an existing level, but that's just lame.
