Have you tried adjusting the darkness of the scanned image? If you fiddle with those settings you can darken the lines of the drawing and make the background white. That might take care of the detail issues. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'sloppy,' do you mean blurry? Maybe sharpening it some would help. You'll want to be careful with that though, don't want it to end up to grainy. I don't have the same scanner you do but I do have an HP, and when I scan something the scanning software allows me to adjust the light/darkness of a picture, ect. Is there a menu like that when you use your scanner? Are you trying to scan in pencil sketches or color? If it's pencil maybe shifting the input to grayscale would help. I'm not really sure what you need, so I'm just throwing some suggestions out there. I'm no computer wiz, so that's the best I got. An example might help, so we can see exactly what you mean.

Good luck, and welcome to FAC.

Hey, I have an HP scanner too! It's a different model, but I assume that when you do your scanning, a program called "HP PrecisionScan Pro" comes up, right?

If that's so, I can help ya. HPPSP has an option in its menu called "Adjust Exposure" (check all menus, particularly Options and Advanced). It will bring up a box like the one I've attached. There are several options on it, but they're easy to use when you know what they do:

The Adjust Exposure box has a historogram (graph) on it that shows the range of tones in your image (from darks to lights).

Highlights slider - Red line on historogram. Drag the slider to the left to brighten areas of the image, but be careful, because all tones lighter than its position (i.e. to the right of the red line) will wash out into a solid color. Hit the "Highlights alarm" on the right to check if which areas will wash out -- they'll flicker black when the alarm is turned on.

Shadows slider - Purple line on historogram. Drag the slider to the right to dark areas of the image, but again be careful -- all tones darker than (left of) the slider's position will wash out. Use the "Shadows Alarm" button to check this.

Midtones slider - Controls the overall brightness of your image without fear of dark or light areas getting washed out. Drag the slider to the right to make the image brighter, drag it to the left to make the image darker.

There are two ways you can run HPPSP. If you hit the scanner's "Scan" button and HPPSP starts up that way, you'll be able to scan & save to disk in one operation, and you can also scan & copy it to the clipboard so you can export it to any other image-handling program. In my experience, HPPSP is pretty crummy at saving JPEG's (low quality).

Or, you can start up Photoshop or similar programs (almost anything, except for MSP) and look around for an "Acquire" or "Capture from Scanner" type command. This will call HPPSP so that you can scan the image, and when you're done (hit the "Return To..." black arrow on HPPSP's toolbar) it will send the scanned image into Photoshop where you can play with it further.
