Okay, I think its time for a really serious topic in the Music section. I just want to see what happens when we start a debate over which rock band is indeed The Best Band To Ever Grace God's Green Earth? I want this to be very serious now. Y'know, any band can be brought up but just make sure you have something to back it up. Now a great band is normally based on a factors like...

1. Music Skills
2. Lyric strength
3. Influence it has on future bands and generations
4. Do people still listen to this band like its new (if referring to a classic band)
5. Singing talent of the frontman (or other band members)
6. Are they still around and performing? (Not really an important factor but feel free to use this as a reason also.)

These are just some ideas to get you started. Remember, be serious about who you're sticking up for. And yes, if someone wishes to put a pop rock band here, they can just have reasonable...um...reasons for thinking that the band really is the best.

I'll leave this thread open for some suggestions. I'm curious to see what band will be mentioned first. I already have my own opinion (and no, its not GnR) but I'll keep it to myself till I find it necissary to say it. ^_^

So lets have some damn fun with this too! Razz

Hard choice. Torn between Sabbath and Zeppelin...

Hm, gonna have to go with Led Zeppelin.

1. Music Skills
Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, how could it fail? They all got skillz. Excellent melodies, all the elements blended together to form rock perfection.

2. Lyric strength
Without breaking it down song by song, they've got some pure gold. And not just Stairway To Heaven.

3. Influence it has on future bands and generations
Surprised Most definitely. One of the biggest influences on rock and the co-grandfathers of heavy metal (depending on whether you want to give the title to them or Sabbath). Everyone is influenced by Zeppelin, even shitty pop rock acts.

4. Do people still listen to this band like its new (if referring to a classic band)
All the time! New Zeppelin fans are born everyday, as they rightfully should be.

5. Singing talent of the frontman (or other band members)
The amount of times Robert Plant is left out of "Best ____" polls is horrifying. He's one of the best frontmen of all time. So graceful in performance with vocal strength that kills. Versatile and a brilliant performer. Nice tight pants, too.

So far, I'm liking what I'm seeing. ^_^ I knew (or rather hoped) Zeplin was gonna pop up here. Also Ozzy (or Black Sabbath, whatever you prefer) should be here too.

But neither one of these bands was my choice. Cool I thought a little bit later than Zeplin but not as late as Sabbath. Still gonna keep it too myself until I see more suggestions. Razz But they're good, trust me. And they definetly deserve a spot here.

Van Halen? Aerosmith? AC/DC? Hanoi Rocks (Razz)? Not that all those eras work with what you said.
Van Halen? Aerosmith? AC/DC? Hanoi Rocks ()? Not that all those eras work with what you said.
You actually guessed it right. Razz Congrats! I guess I'll say it now 'cuz the music section here is painfully slow these days and it'll take awhile for anyone besides you, me, and coffeluver to add anything here. Rolling eyes

I personally think that Aerosmith is the best band to ever come into creation. Cool And this is why I think so...

I. Joe Perry is a guitar genius who has come up with some of the best riffs and tunes in the business. All you have to do is listen to about three seconds of one of their songs to realize that its an Aerosmith song. Also the drummer (I want to say its Brad but I think I'm wrong. ) is very skilled and like Perry, has come up with beats that people can idenify today.

II. Lyrically, their songs kick ass. Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way, Dream On, Back in the Saddle...all of which could be considered anthems for any generation to come. Also, its very rare for a band to pull out as many excellent power ballads out their asses like they do. Lets see, there's Cryin', Amazin', Tell Me What it Takes (to let you go), and Crazy are all considered some of the best power ballads in rock. They're not so sappy where its not rock but its not so hard that unless you're gonna hump something to this song then its not even worth being called romantic.

III. Guns 'n Roses was very influenced by just this band alone. I mean, even Slash himself said that he wouldn't have picked up a guitar if it wasn't for the Aerosmith ROCKS album and Joe Perry's guitar playing which inspired him to play. And I can go on and on about other bands that were (and still are) influenced by them but I think this is reason enough for now.

IV. Three words...Steve f*ckin' Tyler. Argueably the best frontman in the rock industry. He has such a beautiful voice and he is a legend on stage in terms of giving a kick ass performance everytime. And people who haven't even heard of Aerosmith can hear Steve Tyler sing and say "Hey! Thats Steve Tyler singing, isn't it?" And even after almost forty years, he's still got it and can go back on tour whenever he wants to. Plus, he's just the world's best screamer. He can scream the phone book, record it, and sell the album and I would still buy it. Thats how much I love Steve Tyler.

I think thats enough to prove my point. ^_^ I think they kick ass. They were my first rock band so Steve Tyler has a little spot in my heart just for him.

1. Music Skills

The Beatles revolutionized the way certain things were played. They gave us feedback! George Harrison's work on songs like Here Comes The Sun or While My Guitar Gently Weeps are untouchable. Paul McCartney's bass playing was also revolutionary. Not to mention the band used all types of different music styles.. everything from white Reggae (Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da) to heavy metal (Helter Skelter) to rag-time (Honey Pie) ...and that's only on the White Album!

2. Lyric strength

Lyrical strength? Do I even need to make an argument for this? Songs like All You Need Is Love and With A Little Help From My Friends have worked their way into the social subconscious... they're now a part of everyday life.

3. Influence it has on future bands and generations

I think every band that ever came along was influenced by The Beatles. How could you not be? And they still are. I know I am.

4. Do people still listen to this band like its new (if referring to a classic band)

Youg people are always discovering The Beatles' music. When I first heard it, I was like, "OMG! There's this great band who plays this awesome music! I want to hear more!" Not to mention we just keep coming up with new things about the songs to talk about... whether it's who sang the "aaaaah" in A Day In The Life, or what was the opening chord in A Hard Day's Night. Old fans, too.

5. Singing talent of the frontman (or other band members)

Since John Lennon and Paul McCartney were technically bothe the front man of the group, I'm to include them both. John has a very recognizable voice- he can do these great, sneering, sarcastic vocals or he can do sincere pleading. Paul McCartney just has a musically perfect voice. It's pleasant to listen to, and almost always in pitch. But he can also do anything he wants with it- he can be Growly Macca (Oh! Darling) or Sweet Macca (Here, There And Everywhere) he really knows how to showcase his voice and has a great range.

6. Are they still around and performing? (Not really an important factor but feel free to use this as a reason also.)
Mmm... well, John and George haven't been up to much lately considering they're (metaphorically) six feet under, but Paul's been perfroming quite a lot lately.. his show at the super bowl for instance. And he's starting a North American this year.

1: Genesis as the 5 man band. thier tallents on thier individual instruments is hard to even comprehend not yet being cross tallented.

2: Genesis had some of the most unique lyrics "Im just a lawnmower...you can tell by the way I walk" they didnt just write about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. ahhh "All in a Mouses Night."

3: Genesis had brought to a head in the early to mid 70s what the Moody Blues gave birth to in the 60s. Classical Rock...no no not classic rock, thats anything over 20 yeqars old, I mean pieces like "Suppers Ready" that were good enough to challange the span of time like Classical music.

4: shamefully only the 3 man band pop music of the late 70s to early 90s is still remembered. funny thing is that Rutherford and Banks wrote all the music over the years, but the influences of the other members of the band that dictated the styles over the years...ie: Peter Gabriel, then Steve Hackett, and of course the pop stuff of Phil Collins.

5: the lead singers of Peter Gabriel then Phil Collins were definetly tops. others from other bands compare, but in the genre they sang they were the only two that didnt sound like they had thier b*lls in a vice since The Moody Blues.

6: shamefully their gone. a new lead was brought in and drummer after the exit of Phil, thing is they did not give any influence to Mike and Tonys writting, so it sounded like Collins throw aways, and he wasnt even the lead anymore. shame because both wrote seperately for thier own albums in the 80s and did well. the music was well composed (as usual) and thier own style came out, but they didnt apply these attributes to the main band they had written for for 20+ years. the only album to be released after the exit of Phil was a bomb and they decieded to give up the name. I heard rumers of Pete, Phil, Steve, Tony, and Mike getting together to produce some more music...mayby an album? I can only pray. the world lost a great band when Mike and Tony threw in the towel.

*Sqee!* I'm loving where this is going. ^_^ Everyone has such strong opinions about the band of their choice and its just so bitchin'. Will we ever decide who is the best? Probably not but if anyone wants to debate against another band choice here, then feel free to. I have no reason to disagree with anyone's opinions so far. *Is waiting for a GC fan to come on here or an SP fan and prove their point* I'm just curious. :angel face: Rolling eyes

Yep ahhhhhhh, *cracks neck then opens up the guiness book of world records* Take a guess what Im gonna say.'

Thats right Pink Floyd,

My reasons,
Well............ thier album Darkside of the moon broke the record (and still is) for having the most weeks on U.S. album chart " Darkside of the moon by Pink Floyd entered the US chart on March 17, 1973 and is still there. It spent 741 weeks on the top 200 and 353 weeks in the on the pop catalogue chart up to 1998, topping the latter in its 1,075th week on the chart."

Also THE BIGGEST ROCK CONCERT " On July 21, 1990 an estimated 200,000 people watched the Roger Water's Production of Pink Floyd's The WALL at Postdamer Platz on the between east and West Berlin, Germany. It involved 600 performers". (keep in mind Im qouting from the guiness book of world records)

And MOST POWERFUL TOUR LASERS
" The British rock group Pink Floyd took a pair of 50-watt cooper vapor laser on their Division Bell Tour, Which ended in 1997, The green and red lasers, which cost a total of $400,000, were supplied by Oxford Laser and are the most powerful and expensive lasers ever taken on a tour show."

Those are my reasons why Im a die hard floyd fan. Cool

WTF? Well I haven't listened to all those older bands (like Zeppelin or something like that), but I really love this band called Powerman 5000.

*Music Skills
Sort of a catchy, industrial metal kind of music.
*Lyric strength
The lyrics of their music (from what I have listened to) are edgy, space-themed kind of lyrics. Excerpt:
"Hang on to tomorrow, because tonight, the stars...
Sing your favorite song, because tonight, the stars...
Show the way to die, because tonight, the stars...REVOLT!"
*Influence it has on future bands and generations
Well, none that I know of...*sniff*
*Singing talent of the frontman (or other band members)
The frontman's (I'm pretty sure his stagename is Spider) voice sounds really unique to me, a sort of not-too-deep-but-deep-enough voice that I believe fits the music perfectly

I'm not a completely hardcore fan, but I relly do love these guys. I sound pathetic compared to everyone else's reasons.

Red Hot Chili Peppers. They match all your criteria the best.
kiedis: great voice, not the best, but talented and well seasoned with about 2 decades of experience.
Flea: great bassist without a doubt.
chad: well he just wants to ROCK!
John: My personal favorite guitarist (Slash is a close second). With his mix in blues, he sounds an awful lot like Jimmi Hendrix with his solo's. Beautiful lyricist, can you figure out which of his songs I took my username from? And which lyric? (note: its Johns song, not RHCP)
Plus: Dave Navarro passed through, an all-star cast.

Metallica is close. Very good group chemistry.

AreoSmith is there too. can't believe the're still together.

I HATE the Beatles, but the're up there, can't deny them.

BTW, is that Flea and Anthony hugging in your avatar? There's a picture of all four hugging on their BSSM CD booklet.

Fav song of all time? well, you won't find it on anyone elses list, but it's called "Don't Forget Me" by RHCP

No, that's Duff McKagan (in my avatar as well) and Scott Weiland from the Fall To Pieces video by Velvet Revolver.
