You'd think I'd get bored with starting all these rock topics. Laughing I'm sure you all are too but I just have to ask this. Since there's already a topic about the best guitarists, its only fair to talk about what made these guitarists legendary. So which solo reigns above all? I'm talking skill-wise, sound-wise, time-wise, and overall bitchin'-wise. Cool

To sum up my choice in three words I'll say...

Slash November Rain

Figure it out. Wink

Mr. Crowley - Randy Rhoads.
And The Cradle Will Rock - EVH. Not much of a solo, but right after "Have you seen Junior's grades?" is one of my favorite guitar parts of any song ever.

Ok!!

Tubular Bells, the one from the Excorsist composed entirely (1337) by Mike Oldfield. At 13:28seconds into the song a piece of guitaring kicks in which doesn't last long but is class.. then at 14:06 the good s**t kicks in and it's like WHAMM WHAMMAH WHAM A-WHAM!!

It's sooooo groov-ay!! I love it, man. That bit just gets me everytime I simply HAVE to air-guitar :P

Edit: but at 17:01 a beast of a tune thumps into the song on bass and it's raaather catchy... ^_^

The guitar solos in 'Bohemian Rhapsody' were pretty good.

Even though this thread had been dead for over a year...
Anything by John Petrucci is bitchin'. Vai can make his guitar "talk", so that's bitchin'.
Satriani taught Vai and Hammett, and his work is great.
Petrucci wins for most bitchin', simply because he can pick every single note and still sound amazing. It's a very hard skill to harness, and he does it like it's nothing.
He also shreds harder than all of the above.
I like "Glasgow Kiss", personally, but it's not his most bitchin' moment.
The first track off of "Suspended Animation" would have the most bitching piece of work I've ever heard. "Jaws of Life" is insanity.
I suggest checking it out for yourselves.

I personally like the way the solo in "Throught the Fire and the Flames" by Dragonforce is done.

Herman Li sold his soul for speed in his fingers.... I personally think that shred isn't that good, the only guys who put feeling to it are Steve Vai and malmsteen when he plays with G3...

In shred, it's the live performances that really count. You have to watch them smile and strain and put forth their emotions in a compelling live performance to really give it emotional value and worth.
Otherwise, you just hear it and think "yeah, that's cool, but....".
Vai, Satriani, and Petrucci put forth loads of emotion in their work. Malmsteen had to start from scratch after an accident basically paralyzed his left hand. Even if it was temporary, he had to start playing all over again from the beginning. That takes heart. He could have given up, but no.
Hendrix put forth loads of emotion on his albums, but his live performances were what made him Hendrix.

I think the same way, but the thing is that Vai and Satriani shred a couple of times as a plus in their songs, but others like petrucci and malmsteen just play 15 nps for the whole song and I don't think its that cool.... although as you say, watching them play live is amazing.... when malmsteen starts sweating and all his hair goes into his face and sticks there and he simply keeps playing is amazing.

What I still don't understand is how the hell he can play the way he does with those fat fingers of his....

Also, the guitar solo in the song "Shout" by Tears for Fears was good sounding.

Actually, Petrucci's solo work is very emotional and he uses more blues scales than he does in Dream Theater. Also, he doesn't just shred over and over.
I mean, he doesn't even do that in all of DT's music. "Hollow Years" is a beautiful classical piece without shred whatsoever.

I didn't say its in all the songs, just that if there is a little bit of shred it gets extended a really long time.... and hollow years is good but after a while I get tired of it...

Another good one, in my opinion, would be the solo in "Some Like It Hot" by Andy Taylor.
