Maybe you have some Marvel comics on your monthly pull-list, maybe you don't. But even if you don't, you probably still glance at the covers as you browse, and maybe even skim through the pages.
I haven't been to a comic shop in months, and yet Marvel has still managed to piss me of.
See, comic book companies are usually fairly moderate. They don't take sides on outside issues because, well, they shouldn't matter. But Marvel has this mindset that the only way to sell books is to go completely outside the fiction genre and leap headlong into issues that are not only real, but sometimes very offensive and stupid.
"Why does this little snot care?" You're asking.
Well, it used to be that most comic book readers were slightler more intellegent than the rest of the goobs out there. You had to be to get the whole concept of heroing, and selflessness, and altruism that a superhero entails. ((You'll mind that I'm using the word "intellegent" loosely -- if you're not putting a pan on your head and running full-speed into a wall, you qualify as "above average".)) But Marvel has sat down and conciously made an effort to sell to the dumbass. It's like they couldn't find any other way to stay afloat. Now, I'll grant you, for a comic book to sell enough copies to break even in one month is like Mount St. Helens errupting -- sure it happens, but it doesn't happen often. Still, DC is able to stay up, and they haven't had the massive movie successes and marketing flood that Marvel has.
Maybe it's becaused I'm a tad biased to begin with.
My only knowledge of the inner-workings of Marvel have come from Paty and Dave Cockrum, who have been screwed over by the company time and time again.
Maybe it's because I'm a peace-loving liberal.
Marvel has published a book about soldiers in Iraq that is, shall we say, a bit too kind to the government.
Maybe it's because Marvel is just plain evil.
You know, I never thought I'd come to call DC the "under-dog", but it's playing out that way. And Marvel has become the evil, all-encompassing corperate monster. Which is saying a lot, since DC is owned by AOL-Time-Warner.
So there you go. A pointless, useless, rant.
Joy.
