I started using Mozilla lately and I think it's faster and better than Internet Explorer which I've been using for like forever. And I like the little tab function. I don't have to open up a new window to see another link or site and the keep the old one. It keeps my computer from being having a spasm So what do you think is better? Mozilla or IE? ^_^ |

Mozilla . . . you mean Firefox? Netscape, which uses much of the same code, also features tabbed browsing and a built-in popup blocker.
Far as I'm concerned, the browsers fall out as thus:
Internet Explorer:
+ Bookmark system is very stable.
+ "Show This Image" command to reload a single image on the page after telling it to "Stop" (or other problems keep it from loading completely)
-- Windows shell integration. There's no singular "Options" screen, and if IE crashes, chances are you'll need to reboot anyways.
-- Funky full-page error messages.
-- Slow loading times, particularly on slower machines (like mine )
-- Bookmarks system is a waste of disk space (at least on FAT32 drives)
-- Countless known risks and security holes.
Netscape:
+ Better favicon support than IE.
+ Bookmarks are stored in a file, easily ported from one location to another.
+ Tabbed browsing and built-in pop-up blocker (with toolbar switch).
+ Homepage customizable depending on startup / new window / new tab.
+ Built-in HTML editor.
+ Built-in IM capabilities, i.e. AIM and ICQ.
+ Options are easily found and managed.
-- Slow startup times
Firefox:
+ Fast startup times
+ Tabbed browsing, popup blocker
+ Runs on code similar to Netscape, has similar options
+ Built-in download manager
+/-- Shares bookmarks and cookies with Netscape
-- No built-in Windows icon (a minor point, yeah, but still WHY doesn't it have one?) _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

firefox has some funky things that i.e. can do better. for example, firefox for some reason doesn't support the "slide show" feature in yahoo group galleries. :/ plus a few other things. |

I use mozilla firefox...and absolutely DESPISE IE now
the little 'open link in new tab' feature allows you to have a few webpages open at once without having a million things crowding your taskbar, for starters. ^_^ |
Isn't firefox for macs? Cause...why have firefox and mozilla when they're practically the same thing? Sorry if it's a stupid question, lol.
mozilla is the original project, firefox is basically "mozilla lite" with a few featues added to the UI (such as the search bar). Firefox is faster, but has no integrated email client (not too much of a problem now that thunderbird is out, but used to be annoying back in the .2 days) Mozilla also recieves updates to components such as the render engine first before the firefox project incorporates the updates into their code base. Because of this mozilla usualy starts up slower, but renders pages slightly faster. Mozilla also has Chatzilla, Composer an address book, and so on. Since the mail and browser are the same program, it uses almost no additional ram to open mail or any of the other mozilla components while mozilla is open, so if you use them all, it might actually save ram over using all of the firefox/thunderbird/other non mozilla products to do the same thing.
Also if anyone is interested, the history of mozilla is actually interesting, its not that netscape uses much of the same code, netscape IS mozilla. Don't believe me? Find a system with netscape navigator <= 4.7 and type about:mozilla into the address bar |

you say that, but what is the harm in trying something else? its free, and has many features that make it better than IE, also due to the fact that less people use it, there are less sites trying to exploit the security flaws in it, meaning less spyware, virus, and other such crap you don't want. And trust me, once you learn the wonder of tabs, you will never want to live without them..... |

I personally use Firefox. The tabbed browsing keeps my computer from crashing - it's really old, so if I have too many windows open/processes running, it explodes. <<; Which brings up the pop-up blocker. ^^; It doesn't stop them 100% of the time, but it does a fairly good job of keeping most of them out.

Another aspect where Firefox has an advantage: The "Find in this page" function uses a toolbar instead of an on-top dialog box, which doesn't obscure the page you're viewing NEARLY as much as on NS or IE. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Yeah. I like how it searches while you type. The IE I used actually required you to type the whole word in, then hit 'search'. I didn't really like that very much. _________________

Blame it on the site, not the browser
In other words, Firefox is not as forgiving as NS or IE regarding pages that don't totally comply with current W3C HTML standards.
I remember checking out a GameSpy forum somewhere on forumplanet, the forums didn't code their stylesheets correctly, and as a result the ENTIRE FORUM wouldn't display properly on Firefox (black on black . . . grr) . _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

IE got screwed on my computer quite awhile ago, and I haven't reinstalled a whole bunch of things to fix it. Just gives a syntax error if I open it. So now I use Mozilla (don't like Firefox for some reason). The tabbed browsing is nice, but it doesn't support some things. Like the features on Launch, such as the video player, will only work on IE or Netscape. Netscape doesn't like to run on my computer and keeps closing itself
(yeah yeah, I'm sure much of the problem is things that have installed themselves on my computer and haven't been caught by a scan yet. Doesn't change the fact it doesn't work) _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I know that. I have both "Mozilla" and "Mozilla Firefox" installed on this computer. I use the former, not the latter. With the dragon icon and not the little fox around the globe. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
