Didnt Atari produce videogames in the 80's?

The way I remember it was that Nintendo really brought games to new levels with the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) which came about around 1990, maybe a bit earlier, I'm not sure. After that we had the Sega Mega Drive and SNES going at it for popularity.
Nintendo really started to make something out of gaming, but gaming still went on during the 80s. A couple of the big consoles around then were the Atari 2600 (which I had ^_^ ) and the ZX Spectrum. In terms of games, you'd be looking at stuff like Space Invaders, Centipede, Mario Bros, Pong. Some real old school stuff.
Doubt I've shed any light on things, but what the hey.
Pic below is an Atari 2600. _________________ "You know what? My squirrel instinct tells me he's even more of a bastard than I first thought." - Gene Hunt |

Nintendo saved the industry after it crashed. After Atari's E.T. cartridges were buried in New Mexico (I kid you not,) Atari went downhill and home console gaming as we know it ceased to exist. But then the all-mighty Nintendo game along...
And then the God of Gaming (Shigeru Miyamoto, AKA: Shiggy, Shigster, etc.) proclaimed "Let there be games!" And then he ate a mushroom sandwich.
However, those mushrooms were poison mushrooms, and he started to see spots and red and green plumbers. He used this hallucination to make the Mario Bros. series.
Later on, he ate another poisonous mushroom sandwich to get an idea for a new character in a game he was going to make called "Super Mario World." Then along came...Yoshi in all his glory. He was ridable, too. Shiggy got the "riding" idea after eating a mushroom candy bar while riding one of those kiddy mechanical animal rides that you insert the quarter in at the grocery store.
Okay...paragraphics two through four are complete BS, but the first one is true. |

I say the real age of video gaming started when Nintendo developed Famicom in the late 80's. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

ColecoVision had Donkey Kong. And better graphics than Atari.

Apologies for just spouting out a link. It's a good read, though. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
