Anybody here listen to metal? now when I say 'metal' I do not mean bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, or Slipknot..lol! Those are pop-rock and alternative rock..not metal.
My favorite sub-genres of metal are power, heavy, death , and melodic death metal I'm not a big fan of black metal..but that shouldn't matter since music should be graded on it's music itself, not by it's catagory.
Favorite bands? Iron Maiden, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Dissection, Ram-Zet, Orphaned Land, and Dark Tranquility (and so much more! ^___^). I also LOVE Carcass! Music as brutal and hell and they got some really insane-sounding growling vocals! I only wish more people know them...it's a pity such a good band is left ignored :(

No, but I've heard of enough of Metallica's best (everything after the Black ablum was so sellout..) and I'll tell you...they're not THAT deserving of praise. If I had a choice, Slayer would be proclaimed more as thrash metal gods more then metallica. They kept on releasing solid albums and never sold out...like what Metallica did <_< But hey, whatever floats your boat..
even though I really do like the lyrics on 'One'..that song was pretty good.

The only problem I got with Children of Bodom was thier rather stupid lyrics..but hey, the music is so fun to listen to...so no big deal xD My personal favorite has to be 'Hate Me!' from Follow the Reaper.
Right now I'm listening to Bloodshed from Amon Amarth. always gotta scream "BLOODSHED!!" whenever they do...lol. Great song! |

Did I sound a bit mean on that last post? I didn't mean to, it's just that I get sickly annoyed whenever someone mentions Metallica is the best metal band out there. I got nothing against that, it's just that it's what all people say when I ask them "Whats your favorite metal band?".
They get tons of exposure, I think thats why everbody knows them. But before saying they're the 'gods' of metal it's best to look deeper into the genre itself. there is much more to the world of metal other then Metallica. Metal is a underground genre of music itself..something like it could never be mainstream (unless it sold out..like Metallica did).
Check out other thrash bands that get less exposure, such as Kreator, Megadeth, Testament, Possessed, Anthrax, Vio-Lence, or Dark Angel..you might be suprised with what you can find :)
ariel- Arch Enemy has the most insane growler vocalist...and it's a girl too! I've always thought I'd never get good at growling because I'm a girl and all..but Angela pretty much inspired me to keep on practicing. It's fun to scare all the boys by letting loose a freaky, loud, throaty roar xD |

Megadeth gets quite a bit of exposure, at least with Dave making the VH1 show circuit. I've seen him on several of 'em. If it's about metal, rock, hair metal, or grunge, seems he's on it. Not that that's a bad thing. (<3 Dave)
EDIT: If you haven't seen this before, some of the "gods of metal" had very...interesting beginnings in music. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
Metallica helped to define the way metal was played, like in the 80's when they started.
Well, so did Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. In fact, those two bands were extremely influentual in the metal word. Hell, Judas Priest was the main band that started the whole 'heavy metal' movement in the early 80s and pretty much what created the genre it is today. Metallica was an influentual band too, yep, but compared to Judas Priest, they're pretty much flies in term of which bands contributed more to the style of metal. besides, Priest have been around since what? 1974? Waay before Metallica was here.
In fact, Priest is one of the influential metal bands to EVER exist. They started the whole NWOBHM (new wave of british heavy metal..an important piece of metal history), influenced thrash in the mid 80s, and even influenced many death metal bands in the mid 90s. They're even still influential today...I mean..take a look at the whole crapload of Judas Priest covers still coming out over the years..
Rob Halford is the metal god..best voice in metal defiently. Take a listen to the Painkiller album..and you'll know what I mean.. |

 they are american
LOL!!! DUH, Metallica is American..what the hell do you think I am?! Blind? what I am trying to say is that Judas Priest is one of the biggest influence (bigger then Metallica anyway) in the world of metal. NWOBHM is a muscial movement that almost created the world of metal it is today. Metal bands THROUGHOUT the entire WORLD were influenced through the NWOBHM. Sorry, but I think you seriously need to learn your metal history
oh yeah, btw, did you know that the NWOBHM is what influenced thrash metal? yup, thrash metal as in Metallica.
fiona: Genre after death metal? what do you mean by that? If your talking about what was influenced by death next you could say grindcore. Grind was influenced by a mix of death and thrash..
anyway here is a list of metal genres (not in a particular order..)...
-Heavy/true/british (british is also style of music as well as a nationality..lol..)
-Doom
-Black
-Thrash
-Grindcore
-Death
-Melodic Death Metal/swedish
-Progressive
-Math (I got no idea about this one, I only heard about it but never listened yet..)
-Gothic
-Power/epic metal
-Folk
-Thrash
-Viking
-Symphonic/orchestrial
-Metalcore
-Electronic
these genres arn't really 'true' but they were influenced by some metal so I'll list them here..
-industrial
-Hair/glam
-nu/alternative |

Rammstein...they're good. I don't really know that, considering I've only heard one song of theirs- "Amerika". German metal. Good stuff.
