I prefer action/platforming type games, particularly the genre-blenders. The stories of an RPG make playing them worthwhile, however, when it comes to the actual gameplay, I think better in real-time. Turn-based has some advantages, but it can never replace the tension, the viscerity of real-time gameplay. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

My favourite genre would have to be SRPG. I like the RPG part for much of the elements that you've mentioned, Genkai, but the simplicity of turn-based battles really turn me off, especially with some games. That's why I go for the SRPGs, sometimes, there's actually a bit of thinking required. ^_^ I'd play any other kind of game, too (well, maybe not. I really dislike FPS games), but SRPGs are my most beloved. =D _________________

Lemme see.....RPGs, platform action, shooter....I don't choose as long as the game's good but I would say that I like racing the best. NNGGAAHHH, few people like the racing genre!! And I'm one of those people.
Sorry, I'm just gonna stick to being a racing master in my scool and my neighborhood.
OOOHHH...those revving engines make me a good lullaby..... *snoooorr* _________________ --Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas. But of a humble heart, the Lord wil not scorn, and from its abundance the mouth speaks.

Action. Syphon Filter, Metal Gear, you get the idea.
Like a good RPG though every once in a while. _________________ "You know what? My squirrel instinct tells me he's even more of a bastard than I first thought." - Gene Hunt |

I usually end up playing RPGs..thats my favorite genre xD I also like Real time strategy (like starcraft), time based strategy (like age of wonders), and fighting games. But pretty much I'll play any game, regardless of it's genre...well...except for racing and sports games. Those are boring to me
it's weird how so any people on the internet love RPGs...but there are so few of them in real life that play em. that, or the people at my school are no-lifers |
Oh yes, I'm very big on those as well. I adored Final Fantasy Tactics. Of course like I've mentioned in various other posts, I love all kinds of games, even FPS'.
In my opinion though, SRPG's are just another form of an RPG, thus I include them in my wide area of RPG's.
I understand what you mean by the simplicity of the battles. In some games like Legend of the Dragoon the battle system will keep you awake because you have to pull off timing and such to make the attacks more effective. But, in games such as Breath of Fire 2, the battling can get very old and tiring. Probably one of the only flaws of RPG's that I can really note on.
^__^ Final Fantasy Tactics is still my favourite FF. I can't believe what they did to the storyline in FFT:A; it was terrible. ;_; I hated how they redid pretty much everything. ><
Hm~ I thought that battle system in LoD was fairly innovative at that time, but once you got the hang of it, it wasn't really that interesting anymore. I remember one of my friends being able to do Albert's hardest attack with his eyes closed just because he'd used it so often before that he knew the exact timing of the hits. XD
It was still pretty cool, though (although if there was something I had to gripe about from that game, it would be the terrible grammar/spelling mistakes everywhere and, also, the translations of the lines were far too literal. None of the characters sounded like they could be real people. >< ) and I really loved that game when I played it. Also, somethings I've noticed about that game... Hidden weapons, anyone? I found that, when battling the ultimate-dragon-thing in the volcano (I've forgotten its name XD), I received a different set of battle spoils when I had one person left standing, as opposed to all of them left standing. o_O
Of course, FF's battle system pales in comparison.
Of course a lot of people think that all RPG fighting is based on how high-level a character is and how good their equipment is and such, but it's really not. Sure it's a big part of it, but there is a lot of strategy to battling if your good at it. Not as much as in some other genres, but there is a certain degree.
Unless, that is, we're talking about your generic RPG. Once you're at a high enough level, you can just go into a battle, pin down the attack button, leave, and when you come back, the battle should be over. -__-; Strategy really isn't needed unless you're at a low level, or the enemy is just super strong.
EDIT: I just realized that one of my other favourite genres would be action/adventure. Castlevania series = luff. ^__^; _________________

RPG'S ARE JUST THE BEST! My only regret is that I didn't play them sooner! Besides, I like RPG'S because they take a while to beat. I'll play any other genre of games, too, except for sports and realistic racing games cause I suck at those. |

Oh, sorry. That was my bad. Then I shall apologize by giving you some SAKE. And you shall drink it. Then you will give me penance. Okay, I am exaggerating. That was also my bad.
You like SAKE? I dont like it, so I will give mine to you...*continues blabbering nonesense* _________________ --Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas. But of a humble heart, the Lord wil not scorn, and from its abundance the mouth speaks.
