In my opinion, some of the greatest lyric phrases ever written are (in no particular order)
Pink Floyd, The Wall: I don't need no arms around me, and I dont need no drugs to calm me
NIN, Hurt: I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel. I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real.
Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here: We're just two lost souls Swimming in a fish bowl. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |
Hurt was written by Nine Inch Nails.
That song now scares me. Not because of the lyrics or anything but I once fell asleep and dreamt about that song (I could actually hear it while I was dreaming.)And of course the end is like this big BANG and static sound and it got so loud in my dream that it woke me up. Plus NIN songs like The Art of Self Destruction Part 2 and Eraser:Polite were playing over Hurt too. I'm off NIN for a while now.
But on topic...
Dream On, Aerosmith: Every time, I look in the mirror, all these lines on my face gettin' clearer. The past is gone leaning on black dusk to dawn. Isn't that way? Everybody's got their dues and not today...I know nobody knows where it comes and where it goes. I know everybody says 'you got your dues.'
Lovin' in an Elevator, Aerosmith: Lovin' in an elevator, livin' it up when I'm goin' down. Love in an elevator. Lovin' it up till I hit the ground!
Buick McKayne, Guns 'n Roses: I said I know what to do. I'm gonna f*ck, f*ck, f*ck you. F*ck you. (I just find this one really funny.)
One in a Million, Guns 'n Roses: Immigrants and faggots, I can't understand what they say.
For Those About to Rock, AC/DC: For those about to rock we salute you!
Thats all I can think of for now. I'll come up with more later.
let me edit that because it bothers you two so much.
Only bother is the fact the thread is about great writing. Might as well credit who actually wrote it, no?
More bitchy corrections (I'm such a cunt)...
Buick MacKane was originally written by T-Rex. Gn'R covered it.
The One In a Million lyrics are "immigrants and faggots, they make no sense to me, they come to our country and think they'll do as they please".
No stoning, please... :P
Anyway, let's see, great lines.
Autograph, "Turn Up the Radio": Day in, day out, all week long. Things go better with rock. The only time I turn it down is when I'm sleepin' it off.
Cinderella, "Shelter Me": For some its the needle, For some its the pill, Some people wave the bible 'cause its giving them a thrill, You can spend your money before you get your pay, With a toss of the dice, you can piss it all away, We all need a little shelter...
David Bowie/NIN, "I'm Afraid of Americans": Johnny's in America, Johnny looks up at the stars. Johnny combs his hair and Johnny wants pussy n' cars...
Def Leppard, "Rock of Ages": Rise up, gather round, rock this place to the ground, burn it up, let's go for broke and watch the night go up in smoke. Rock on. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Wow, you guys love covers.
I Love Rock N' Roll is by the Arrows (written by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker).
Wow, you guys love covers.
It all makes sense though. I mean, if the songs didn't contain great phrases and lyrics then they wouldn't be covered by great artist whom we would not be talking about in this thread today. But all the same, I feel a bit sheepish for forgetting the Buick McKayne cover part. I thought only Hair of the Dog and Black Leather were covered on The Spaghettii Incident but I guess I cut up that CD book too soon.
You know what? As long as I got the Aerosmith quotes right then I'm okay with the other mistakes.
And fallen just remined me of another phrase I find interesting...
Ain't it Fun?, Guns n' Roses (with Mick from Haoni Rocks): Ain't fun when you tell her j-just to ? Ain't it fun when she splits and leaves you on the bum? Ain't it fun when you've broken up every band that you've ever begun? Ain't it fun when you know that you're gonna die young? Its such fun.
Panama, Van Halen (This is a speaking part in the middle of the song): Yeah, I'm gonna reach down in between my legs...
Dirty 'Lil Thing, Velvet Revolver: Dead man wishin' they had gotten together with you. But you're a dirty little liar with a message of obession to come.
Once again, all that I can think of at the moment. Sorry if I'm inaccurate with some of them (I think the Ain't it Fun phrase is a little messed up but its a wonder I can understand it at all between Axl and Mick's stuttering throughout the song.)

thanks, fallen. It's always good to be corrected Plus, it's helpful.
I'm not trying to give credit to the wrong people. I just might not know who wrote the original to something. That's not really the point, the point is that those are some good lyrics. From now on, to try to keep this thread staying on topic, I'll just name the song before the phrase, and not the writer.

Nah, the whole album is covers. Including Ain't It Fun (The Dead Boys song)

Mike Monroe
And I love that part of Panama, too. Especially in the video... hehe
Motley Crue, "Shout At The Devil": He'll be the love in your eyes, he'll be the blood between your thighs, and then have you cry for more, he'll put your strength to the test, he'll put the thrill back in bed, sure you've heard it all before.
From now on, to try to keep this thread staying on topic, I'll just name the song before the phrase, and not the writer.
Nah, put the artist! If someone wants to look up the song, it's always easier if you have the artist name too. I'm just being nitpicky 'cause it's about the writing... But if someone wanted to look up the song, they'd be better off with Joan Jett's version, and I like the Guns covers more than most of the originals. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Ok, but I must warn you, I'm too lazy to go searching for original writers.
So if I'm wrong, I apalogize. I do mean to give credit where it's due.
Snow Patrol wrote those lyrics to 'Run'.
*edited*
Oh yeah, GnR covers are the best. Their 'Knockin' on Heavens Door' is better than Bon Jovi's, I think. I even like it better than the way Bob dylan did it.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Don't Forget me: "I'm an inbred, and a pothead, two legs that you spread inside the toolshed"
LOL, funny as hell
Another phrase from that same song: "I'm a meth lab, first rehab, take it all off and step inside the running cab" _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

I know, just correcting where I see it. A lot of people make the same errors. I thought I Love Rock N' Roll was by Joan up until a few years ago. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

And now I want to listen to that song but I cut up the CD cover and booklet. Thank you fallen, now I'm going to be up all night figuring out which number song that is.
And speaking of the Crue...
Hell on High Heels, Motley Crue: Honey, its how you're makin' money, boys call you Hell on High Heels. Baby, the way you're walkin', talkin'. Town calls you Hell on High Heels. Oh baby nice shoes...
Nah, the whole album is covers. Including Ain't It Fun (The Dead Boys song)

Thats really dissapointing.

Shout is track 9 on disc 1.
It's sandwiched between two covers, Helter Skelter and Smokin' in the Boys Room. Huh. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

There's another Motley phrase which really kicked ass but I can't remember it. It was Wild, Wild Side I remember that. It was the first verse. Ugh, looks like I'm going to have to look for disk one. It was like a prayer verse but it was really bitchin'. _________________ Vaccum cleaners may look fun, but are deadly sex toys. as are certain vegetables like, terri schiavo -Powtaz |
