espcially after the scanner lightened the shading so much.
Exposure looks fine to me. If the shading appears too light, just tweak your scanner's "midtones" setting down a notch or two.
Strong points:
- Very well-done anime style.
Weak points:
- Got color?
- Nothing else I can point out at a glance (except for the scanner complaint )
Overall: 4/5. I'm feeling nice today.
Next up, try this.

holy smokes! That is awesome. The coloring is great. It probably took a really long time to draw. (I would never have enough patience to draw something like that) 4.8/10
Got color?
Trust me, if there's one thing that I cannot get my scanner to do well is scan colored pictures. I've tried a bunch of methods, nothing worked too well. |

You sure this isn't the "Rate" The Picture Above Yours thread? Can you give a little more info....
BTW, I always say how much time went into the drawing at the end of my picture descriptions.
And... I'm curious, what kind of scanner program/utility do you have, anyway? Exposure controls shouldn't be hard to find.... _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

paperport. There's not much to work with. Anyways, I'll critique it real quic (was in a rush earlier) Ahem, the lightning effects are nice, though the background sometimes jumps out at you at parts and just sort of diverges you attentoin, for better or for worse, you decide. Anyways, the mecha is well done, though some of the the "corpses" (for lack of another word that fits) seems a tad bit out of place. Dunno, the best way to put it. Still really good. |

Your drawing still turned out better than most "the scanner killed it" type drawings.
For example, this is probably the only drawing I could complain about the scanner "killing" it. The midtones are okay, but the highlights were too bright, and some of the lines washed out because of it. But hey, I know where to find the options, I know how to tweak them, so I won't blame it on the scanner. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

That's not a critique. So, instead of critiquing yours, Kratosgirl, I'm going to critique Animemaster's instead.
http://www.fanart-central.net/pic-212631.html
Strong Points:
- Very strong, vivid colors.
- Great contrast, red and black are pretty striking.
Weak Points:
- Face looks a little on the thin side (cheek area).
- Outlines could use a little more work
Overall:
4 of 5.

Since Strata didn't post any pic, I will comment on Kratosgirls' pic
Weak points
The coloring. you might want it to be more smudge style. Also the head's form is rather weird.
2.5/5 to 3/5
Please critique on this pic of mine

Nice line work--I like the motion in the hair and clothes. The coloring isn't quite up to the same standard though--the shading is kind of random and I'd say you're relying too heavily on the smear or smudge to push them around. A tip about shading skin: use more of a bluish/purplish shadow color unless you're dealing with unusual lighting. Don't be afraid to mix your own shading colors and slap 'em on thick--contrast is nice (something that the skin here is sorely lacking).
Something else to think about is composition--what purpose does the background serve, for instance? Does it say something about the character, give them some setting or context, or is it just filler? Also think about the placement of your text--I find the text on the side to be a bit distracting, and probably would have minimized its presence in the image or left it out completely. Hope that helps a little. :)
The only things I've done recently are Gaia commissions, so here's one that's still in progress:

I'm a little concerned with the style of her face...I like it, but not sure if it will be appealing to anyone else. o_o

You're in Gaia too?
I like your lineart cuz it's very neat and clean. Also her smileThe details on her face and hair also nice but her shoulder is too broad. And look carefully at her upper left arm It's obviously shorter than the other. (I think you try to make it look like she move her hand behind, but if it's that the lower arm should be thinner and smaller) A perspective rule.
That's all!! I don't see much thing to critic cuz ur style's already cool, but it's just my opinion and I believe this pic will be great with color.
I'd give 4/5

Ryoku, you should work on your critiquing skills. A critique must talk about specific aspects of the drawing in particular, not just about your impression of the drawing as a whole. Thus, merely saying "it's great" is not considered a real critique. ("Don't need to fix anything" is only slightly better -- it's still not specific enough.)
Allow me to give an example of a critique, using the same picture:
Strong Points:
- Great sense of anatomy and composition.
- Clothing looks perfect.
- Excellent CG shading and effects.
Weak Points:
- Is it just me or does the lighting on the face seem backwards?
- Legs don't have enough contrast. The dark shades you used on the upper body, use them on the legs as well.
Overall: 4/5, because I don't give out perfect 5's very often.
Next, take this one on for size.

As allways you have some uber unique looking designs. I love the different poses, especially the one farthest to the right, it's ver sweet looking. There's not much I can see that wrong with it except on the mer person at the left.. it might just be the angle but his left hand looks a lot bigger then the right. Also I think I said this to you ages ago in a comment but I still think some white pencil blending techniques would look so good with your coloring style.
4/5
and mine...
http://fanart-central.net/pic-218709.html
(note: the colors are a bit more faded then is my usual but I was using a different scanner then I usually use and I was haveing a hard time figuring out the brightness and contrast... >.> ) _________________

The colors are really nice and it's pretty clear too. Maybe the fingers are too thin but that's pretty much it.
Here is mine. I had to use a webcam so...

I remember something like that... I have at my disposal a white pencil, a colorless blender, and an eraser. But I think I prefer the eraser method though, the other two don't see very much use when shading. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Haha Not bad. The scan is a bit hazy, but its forgivable. I like the face and armor, you did a good job with coloring, and the eye is great. It could use some shading though; it looks rather flat and unconvincing. I do not like the wing at all; you need to work on that, a wing will have several layers and different types of feathers. I only see primary flight feathers. Overall a good job, but it could really use some polishing, I would love to see more detail, more contrast, and shading. Over all a good job, but it needs work.
6/10 I like it, I would love to see a more detailed polished version of this work, perhaps with a different medium.
Heres a more recent work. I tried doing it on canvas but I couldnt pull it off. Sometimes you just cant repeat a one-time thing, you know? It was fleeting inspiration, but I love it in and of itself. A must for my portfolio!

Woof!
But seriously, folks....
Strong Points:
- VERY nice style with all the fur and its detail.
- Eyes are quite expressive.
- Great image contrast/exposure.
Weak Points:
- What's that about the ears, you say?
- Muzzle looks a little longish. Or maybe it's at too much of a downward angle. A little foreshortening, and perhaps being able to see the chin underneath that nose, would be great. (And a higher angle would result in a little more visible shadow on that nose, too)
- Some traces of anthropomorphism in the face. Not sure if it's for readability, but in some spots it doesn't 'feel' much like a wolf.
Overall:
- Great job, 4/5.
And, speaking of wolves, somebody nail this guy. Be aware that I used my inverted technique here, meaning that I couldn't actually see the final colors until I had completed the full drawing, scanned it in, and inverted it:

well, the only prob that I can see is probably aries' face, The eyes are a little bit too distant...(the space that seperate them) but maybe that's your style...dunno ^_^XD
