|
|
Sure, the "Rate the Picture Above You" thread is fun, but when it comes right down to it, it gives me less than no information about the actual quality of my work. Yay, I got a 3/5, a biased opinion by someone who may not like my particular style, without actually learning anything about my drawing.
So here is my version: Critique the pictutre above you. The rating of 1 to 5 still stands, but an extra requirement is at least three sentances of your own critical views. Tell what you like, tell what you don't like. Praise what was done well and say what could be done better. My hope is that we can all grow and learn as artists.
So I will start us off.

The first link worked when I clicked on it, too....
So, I'll give it a critique in a nutshell:
Strong Points:
+ High contrast lineart, easy to see
+ Good job on the clothing folds about her arms, ankles
+ Consistent with your usual style of work
Weak Points:
-- Why are her toes pointed inwards like that? It's an odd stance.
-- The waist/torso area is too thin, should probably be about 50% thicker.
-- What's with the blank eyes?
-- Her jeans just "disappear" at the beltline, there's not much of a clear indication of where the fabric stops and the skin begins. I blame this on the jeans' contours matching the contours of her hips so closely, with no folded details.
Overall Rating:
3 / 5 = Average. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Ok, maybe the problem is on Lindsay's end then. Right, starting over...
Critique the drawing, with an aditional rating of 1-5, then post your own.

Works fine for me.
So...
I'm a fan of your style anyway, so I like this piece, and it's always nice to see people's work in different mediums. I love the highlighting, especially on the trousers.
I know the narrow waist is a style thing, rather than a fault, and usually it looks good, but here it's jarring for some reason, perhaps because the chest-waist-hip ratio has changed. Also her hair seems supershort to be stopping above her ears. That'd mean shaving some of it, surely? The bottom of her shoes seem a little rough - is that an intentional style thing?
Sorry for the poorness of that critique... I'm just biased I guess. Exaggerated busts et al aren't really my style, but this is just cool. And I have no idea if those are gloves or cut-off sleeves, but I want some
4/5

Boy, those edits took me awhile. Should've posted them in a new response maybe....
So, for Rebus's, I'll try to give a quick critique of that one as well.
Strong Points:
+ Great color mixing, creates a nice "mood" for the picture
Weak Points:
-- A bit abstract, difficult to tell what it is at a glance
-- Difficult to identify the little spots chasing him are (deliberate?)
-- I have no knowledge of the backstory and can't provide any more tips
Overall:
4 /5 = Looks good. I like it. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I have got to stop with these rampant edits of mine, my posts keep falling behind
Now for me. I don't really have many drawings that are critique-ready, since I don't draw the same character very often and am always trying something new... hmm... since I gave two critiques, can I propose two pics?

Both of them are potential fodder for a redraw, so choose one and tear it apart ^_^ _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Thank you both for your critiques, this type of stuff is just what I'm looking for. As for Strata wondering about the inverted toes, I was trying to give her a perplexed look, and wanted this to be shown not only in expression but in body language as well. Hence entitling the piece "I Don't Know". Maybe I failed. You can be the judge of that. And the blank eyes are something I do a lot, kind of a "signature", I guess. As for the shoes, Rebus, I just straight up hate feet. It is the only thing I am not comfortable drawing yet. Need more work.
Now, to the drawings...
Strata, I will critique Draco/Riku. Your attention to detail is impressive as always. The vibrant color is something I've always liked. I like the torn wings, you are highly creative with design. Now, one thing that always bothers me is how light the lines and color of your drawings are. We can probably credit this to your scanner, so I don't think you are to blame. Perhaps you could compensate by darkening your drawings? 3/5 over all.
Ok, I have nothing new, but here is one to critique.
Now, one thing that always bothers me is how light the lines and color of your drawings are. We can probably credit this to your scanner, so I don't think you are to blame.
I always adjust the exposure settings by hand to reduce washout and try to match up the colors and contrast to how I interpret the drawing in real life (an inexact science at best), and because my scanner's default settings are too bright anyway.
You could fault an old monitor we replaced a few months back because it never displayed colors bright enough, and you could also fault colored pencils in general as I don't have many "dark" shades to my palette...
But no, you can't fault my scanner. I won't let you _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Everything I do is intention of design. I try to deviate away from the anime look, adopting a more american cartoon style. By exagerating the upper body we can show more clearly the physical power of the character. I also enjoy simplification of form, and rounding out the shoulders gives a sort of symetrical look to him.
Now, your drawing is very good, Genkai. I like her pose, her hair, the folds in her clothing could use a little attention but nothing to get up in arms about. Her hands and feet need some work. Practice just drawing hands. Realistically. Once you can draw them from reality it is easier to simplify them into a cartoon form.
3/5 over all.
Here's a change of pace. Will be intersesting what people have to say about this one.

I like the pencil work and shadows. The hair is very nice, the shadows and wrinkles on the shirt are great too. One thing I notice d is that those hands are tiny. If you were to observe people holding their hands in front of them youd notice that their hands are about the size of their face. You can never make a hand too big, but timid artists make them small. Draw bigger hands and see bigger fortune. The collar is a little strange too.
Beautifully done colored pencil, overall. 7/10 I truly like it. Not enough for an add to my favs.
Here's mine;

Hmm...
Strong points:
+ Very expressive (cat's face, etc.)
+ Nice raindrip effects
Weak points:
-- Shading on the hair doesn't match the actual hair. (Debatable -- it matches the rain though)
-- A little low on contrast (again, debatable -- this IS a simple sketch after all)
-- Facial proportions: The guy's ear looks a little too far back on the head
Overall:
3 / 5. Really can't point out much to improve on it with.
Now, would someone who is not VR_Jay like to discuss this one?

As always, your creature work is good. You do very well with colored pencils. I can only wish I can color even half as good as that.
My only nitpic is, I don't exactly know where the whole half bird/reptile breed is going. He does look like a reptile, but he can easily be mistaken for one of Hawkman's friends.
Anywhoo... 3.5/5. Nice color work.

For a fifteen minute sketch... jeez, I would adore to have that sorta skill and show it within fifteen minutes...
Good points:
--I love the pose and overall design
--Supremely cute, the whole 'neko' thing really works for me
--I adore the tail! X3
--Your overallunderstanding of anatomy is damn good, the hand looks perfect!
Bad points:
--The leg looks slightly... I reckon it should be a little bit more consistantly thick towards the top
--What's with the foot?! It looks kinda outta place in an otherwise well done pic.
--I know you've stressed this point yourself, but it definatly needs inking and perhaps a little colour, CGing or something, maybe not a bad point, but something that'd definatly improve the image.
Overall, I reckon a solid 4 Outta five if you take it as a sketch, 3 outta five as a finished piece.
--------
My shizzatch is a realsitic representation of one of my manga characters done completely using a mouse and photoshop, it was done in about 5 hours because i'm the dammest slowest worker out there. I'm not gonna comment any of my nitpicks about it till afterwards, but what do you guys reckon of it? I particularly am happy with his eyes and hair highlights X3 the red sponging I added around his eyes and knuckes kind of makes it look like he's been in a fight or something...
Meh, hit me with the critisism!

[darth vader]"impressive, most impressive"[/dath vader]
I have to say, that looks mighty impressive!
The shading is a little on the light side, but hell, it's gives a very good depth to the contours of the character's face.
The colors are right on, and the expression on the face is ver well done.
I gotta give this a 5/5.
Keep up the great work!

That's nice. Cute looking character, and I especially love the glasses. I have a weakness for nerdy female characters.
What you can work on:
1. Her body position. Her pose looks very un-natural. Her hips are in one place, while her thighs and torso are on another. It's almost like she broke her back.
2. Proportions. Her waist is awfully small. I recall reading that the basic waist on a female should be about the same size as her head.
So far, your drawings look nice. You can even color better than me. ^_^
BTW, since you can color, take a look at the contest I set up.
CONTEST: COlor My Character
Well then, here's mine.
This was commissioned to me by a friend who's addicted to the T.V. show that this character came from.

Very nice, OMNI-X. I especially like the profile shot you have in the center drawing. The costume screams Wonder Woman. And Captain America. But that was probably what you were going for. Perhaps their illegitimate love-child?
That action shot on the far right is cool, but the drawing in the lower left looks a little hasty. As always, I would love to see you color something. Also, she kinda looks like she has a bulge in the center/right drawing. Just kinda look into that, ya know? Other than that, good physical proportions and a fine-dandy costume wins you a 4/5.
Wow, going waaaaay back with this one, almost two years ago since I originally made it. Something about it still gets me, though. Maybe I'm just being sentamental...
Anyways, I don't expect huge compliments on this one (you people will most likely rip it limb from hapless limb), but I thought I would be fun to post it. ^_^ _________________
(you people will most likely rip it limb from hapless limb)
Most likely, but seeing how it is from two years ago, I'll spare it j/k Anyways, I don't think I have to critique it much (since you improve over 2 years) but a quick run down. The nose seems a little off, I'm not sure what, but just something bugs me. The coloring is nice, and the blank stare is cool 3/5
This is the first time I tried using cross-hatching to shade >< can't say the outcome came out well, espcially after the scanner lightened the shading so much. It's mireille from .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet
