Ah, looking at your screename, I can see why you love this game.
I've played it and beaten it 3 times. That was when I used to own it until I had my friend borrow it and that was the last time I saw it. *shakes fist* I'm planning on buying it again but its hard to find a good copy.
What I loved most about this game was the battle system. I like how when you attack a baddie, you had to time the button presses in correspondence with the homing "squares" coming into each other and flashing. It always kept me on my feet unlike other turn-based RPG's such as FF. It was hard at first, but as I got better at it, it eventually became second nature to me.
As for the storyline, I remember thinking how good it was, but I don't remember what it was about. Something about how these bad guys claimed Shana being the Goddess of Destruction in disguise or something along those lines. I haven't played this game for 4 years already.
As for my favorite character, definitely Shana. She was the driving force in the story and I was saddened when she was taken away and didn't get to have her in my party during disc 4. I wish she and Dart had more intimate moments together 'cause even though I'm a guy, I must confess that I'm a sucker for romance stories. |

I played this game about when it came out. Beat it in about forty hours. Unfortunately, while I am a dragon lover, I did not entirely like Legend of Dragoon.
It was the dragons, mostly.
The graphics are on par with other FF games of the time, unfortunately the voice acting wasn't. Voices during the FMV's were pretty cool, but it seems like they used two different sets of voice actors between the FMV's and combat sound effects.
The difficulty was pretty fair. Some of the toughest bosses had a counterattack ability where they would attack multiple times, depending on how much damage you dished out to them in the previous turn. What was that wingley's name you fought in Disc 2? She was one of them. The hidden boss Faust was the other, if you did some extreme damage, he'd counterattack at least 3, 4 times in a row.
Legend of Dragoon had some interesting play mechanics going for it. The timed hits of the "Addition" system require more attention and sharper reflexes than any FF game. And every now and then when an enemy would try a counterattack (meaning you have to press Circle instead of Square to continue the technique) that could totally throw you off. Eventually, after memorizing the timing on each technique, they become second nature, but at that point I started wishing that the enemies could attempt counterattacks more than once per combo. That would really mix things up.
The other interesting elements to gameplay are the Guard command, not only does it recover 10% of your maximum HP (read: FREE HEALING!) but it also blocks all status ailments and cuts damage by half even from magic. Compare this to Final Fantasy's "Guard" command whose only advantage is being able to leave the characters in that mode for multiple turns.
Some of the boss battles employed interesting mechanics, like Lloyd's one-hit KO against dragoon mode, and the Dragon Staff which neutralized the benefits of dragoon-armored mode (the battle against Divine Dragon comes to mind).
I had a friend who never finished the game, but since I did, he wanted to see the final battle, and BOY did his eyes light up when he discovered Dart's new dragoon mode He didn't live through the battle though, when I did.
I'd say Legend of Dragoon was ambitious, and succeeded at a few things where Final Fantasies fail, but I didn't really like it. Must've been because of the dragons.... _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I agree with the voice acting part. I have to admit, it was "Crest Of The Stars" bad. It would've won me over with more brownie points if it weren't for that.
Oh yeah, and I loved watching Dart's Dragoon transformation in conjunction with his powerful outcry. A lot of times, I would have him morph just to see that. :D
