I don't think they were real. I think it's an artistic human representation of something else that was probably around earlier. There was an interesting idea in one of the Master and Commander books about the phoenix. A guy researched when it had been mentioned in ancient texts as appearing in the sky, and it matched up with the years of a rare comet. Sounded much more impressive in the book, but I think it's probably similar to that.

I would like dragons to exist, but if they did, they'd probably be smaller, have larger wings, and probably wouldn't blow fire....
